The Conservation Project Assistant provides research, project management, some administrative support, and other general assistance to program staff working in TNC’s Eastern Caribbean office in St. George’s, Grenada toward the achievement of protection, conservation or stewardship goals. The position will support TNC projects in the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada. The Conservation Project Assistant will be expected to collaborate and communicate with other TNC staff, scientists, researchers, government officials, regional and international partner organizations, non-governmental organizations and community groups. The position reports to the Eastern Caribbean Director.
The Conservation Project Assistant manages conservation data, participate in eco-regional planning, develop project packages, and maintain manual project records. May include collecting, assembling and analyzing various types of data, in the field or through document surveys, producing maps using GIS software and assisting in the production of reports. Work may be done in the field (species monitoring) or be based entirely in an office setting, compiling the information collected by others. They may be responsible for or assist with the scheduling and coordinating logistics for special events, workshops, conferences and meetings. They may assist with the recruitment and training of program volunteers and interns and may coordinate the activities of volunteers and interns. They will be responsible for supporting projects that advance work in climate resilience, marine managed areas, marine spatial planning. They will also support TNC’s regional effort, the Caribbean Challenge Initiative, where countries have committed to the effective management of 20% of their marine areas by 2020.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Performs tasks as delegated by supervisor, at times under minimal supervision.
- Supervises no staff but may oversee and direct work of office volunteers or interns.
- Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
- Coordinates multiple tasks or provides support to multiple projects in a timely manner and with attention to detail.
- May assist with program budget preparation and monitoring.
- Serves as a team member for assigned projects.
- Willingness to travel, work beyond typical office hours, evenings and weekends as needed per project demands.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- 3 years’ experience in natural resource management, biology, ecology, or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience managing staff or volunteers.
- Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners, i.e., media, government officials, internal scientists.
- Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
- Experience with communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English.
- Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
- Experience in training.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross- cultural experience appreciated
- 3-5 years’ experience in natural resource management, similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.
- Ability to complete tasks independently within assigned time frames.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, with assignments sometimes coming from a number of sources and work independently.
- Ability to coordinate project information from a number of sources to populate databases, create reports and produce manual files.
- Ability to apply research skills. Experience utilizing databases for data entry and report production preferred.
- Strong administrative skills including attention to detail and numerical ability.
- Ability to plan, administer and record results of work-team meetings and activities.
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in marine conservation.
