The Director of Finance and Administration will provide overarching leadership and guidance that promotes operational excellence throughout the Washington Business Unit and supports the Unit’s ability to accomplish strategic priorities. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Financial Management (50%)

  • The DFA is responsible for ensuring senior level financial analysis for unit leaders and is broadly responsible for the management, maintenance and reporting of all financial data related to the Washington Business Unit. This includes annual budget development and monitoring, strategic financial planning, preparation and presentation of regular financial reports and forecasts to internal and external audiences (e.g. Board of Trustees, TNC management at all operational levels), and preparation and response to audits. They provide recommendations related to finances in the overall organizational planning, policy development and implementation.
  • They analyze and advise on all aspects of financial management and work directly with the State Director, Deputy State Director and Board of Trustees to ensure the financial security and sustainability of the organization while helping program staff meet broad and ambitious conservation goals.
  • They will work with the Philanthropy team in managing and tracking Campaign activities, and work collaboratively to ensure that Philanthropy and Finance are closely aligned in their work flows and projects.

Manage Administrative Functions (35%)

  • The DFA manages a multidisciplinary staff team responsible for financial management, accounting, grants and contracts administration, information technology, facilities management and general operations.
  • They will manage vendor relationships, as needed. They will work with teams to establish and track measures and indicators of progress and success.
  • They will lead diverse activities, develop complex processes, project outcomes, and initiate solutions in order to improve effectiveness.
  • They will serve as team leader for the enhancement of financial systems and tools used by the team and will develop guidelines and processes to ensure efficient and accurate fiscal and operational management of the program.

Compliance (15%)

  • The DFA plays an essential risk management role. They monitor management controls and processes to ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures, relevant legal and regulatory frameworks, and financial/management best practices. They reinforce consistency in the organization’s policies and procedures and provide direction related to operations.
  • The DFA will work in close cooperation with any or all of the following: Conservancy staff, donors, trustees, vendors, public agencies, financial institutions, and legal and accounting professionals. Duties are highly confidential and require broad and comprehensive knowledge of TNC’s policies.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

Level of Position: The Director of Finance & Administration is a senior operations position with broad financial, strategic and operational responsibility. They report to the Deputy State Director.

  • Supervise three or more administrative or professional staff, including training and professional development.
  • Manage team accountability for strategic goals related to functional area.
  • Primary liaison to Board of Trustees Finance Committee.
  • Make strategic decisions; decisions may have program-wide impact and may bind the organization financially or legally.

Within the scope of the position, the Director of Finance & Administration will:

  • Provide a leadership role in integrating financial management to support conservation objectives.  
  • Design and manage multiple projects, directing work of staff, setting deadlines, and ensuring accountability.
  • Design and plan new initiatives that will ensure department and organization-wide goals and strategies are achieved.
  • Ensure programmatic commitments, Conservancy policies and procedures, GAAP, and financial standards are met and managed for compliance.
  • Act independently, exercise independent judgment to identify and solve complex financial and operations issues.
  • Direct or participate in negotiations for complex or sensitive agreements.
  • Oversee day-to-day financial activities such as purchasing, processing invoices, expense reporting, negotiating, and contracting with vendors.
  • Oversee general accounting duties, to include: basic journal entries for transfers, loans, land transactions, accruals, deferred revenue and expense corrections.
  • Provide financial expertise and/or analysis on land deals or other special projects.
  • Collaborate with grants specialists and finance staff on managing public and private awards.
  • Ensure revenue, expenses and net assets are managed to reflect donor intent including working with cross-functional teams to perform revenue allocation.
  • Oversee facilities management of 75-person Seattle office and four small field offices. High-level fleet management.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 6 years related experience OR equivalent combination, including 2 years managing operations functions.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Finance / Accounting experience, including using accounting and financial reporting systems.
  • Experience generating financial reports and analyzing and interpreting data.
  • Experience developing and administering departmental budget or equivalent.
  • Supervisory experience including setting objectives, managing performance, and conflict resolution.
  • Experience developing, managing and implementing multiple projects.
  • Experience working with teams across an organization.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences are appreciated.
  • Non-profit GAAP accounting experience; and/or experience with government regulations related to grants and contracts.
  • Ability to work in partnership with others in a collaborative or advisory role.
  • Experience in a leadership role and ability to problem solve and make sound decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills including presentation, conversation and written.
  • Experience developing, managing, and implementing strategic program goals, plans, and complex processes.
  • Experience working with project managers to develop long-term budgets.
  • Expertise in current and evolving technology related to field of experience. Advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel. Data visualization expertise a plus.
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in relevant discipline, preferably in a non-profit environment.
  • Experience monitoring for and ensuring compliance with organizational policy, applicable law and regulation, and finance/accounting/management best practice.
  • Professional certification such as a CPA or CIA, or a candidate for same.
