We’re looking for a creative social media strategist to cultivate communities on our existing social platforms, and execute plans to strategically expand and engage our digital audience. The successful candidate is someone who has a deep understanding of social media, trending topics, and shareable content. This person has the creativity and experience to create original content and the capacity to elevate and insert our existing catalogue in conversations surrounding trending topics. The successful candidate will also work closely with the show’s editorial and events teams to build campaigns around live events and the annual How I Built This Summit to increase community engagement and foster authentic connection.
The audience for How I Built This is a highly-engaged community for the entrepreneurial-minded: company founders, lovers of innovation, and people who are passionate about creating new ideas and watching them grow. It’s a tribe of builders and makers who are eager to exchange ideas, advice, and encouragement with fellow builders.
We are looking for someone who is dedicated to the show’s entrepreneurial spirit, someone who can grow and engage our digital audience more effectively. We want someone to help us build on our existing platforms, and think of innovative ways for the How I Built This community to congregate, celebrate, commiserate, and connect with innovators and business owners around the world.

- Work with the How I Built this management team to steer and develop our social strategy
- Maintain and curate How I Built This social properties on a daily basis – including the How You Built That Facebook community group and its thousands of active participants
- Stay up-to-date on trending topics and strategize how the How I Built This catalogue can provide insights on conversations taking place on social media.
- Craft social engagement strategies around HIBT live events and subsequent content, including the annual How I Built This Summit
- Create original audio and video content that aligns with weekly podcast content
- Oversee and manage the How I Built This newsletter
- Develop and share social best practices with the How I Built This staff
- Collaborate with analysts and product managers in tracking key social metrics
- Work with NPR’s social media team on cross-departmental projects, including digital video
- At least 1.5 years’ experience managing social media channels for a major news/media brand and demonstrated ability to participate in, contribute to and grow online communities.
- Strong communication skills
- Strong writing skills
- Proficiency with navigating a variety of content management systems
- Proficiency with digital video editing production using Adobe Suite programs, especially Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and others
- Proficiency with audio editing production
- Ability to craft a comprehensive, cross-platform social strategy
- Ability and willingness to work varied shifts
- Ability to document internal processes and analyze audience data
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions
- Ability to both work independently and collaborate with others
- Ability and willingness to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
