350.org seeks an experienced, visionary, strategic, and collaborative North America Director to lead 350.org’s program in United States and Canada and the team’s critical work building a multiracial, grassroots climate movement that can hold our leaders accountable to science and justice.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The NA Director is responsible for leading and managing a diverse team of campaigners and organizers to develop and implement program strategies in the region. This role will drive the regional strategy of 350, oversee the development and monitoring of the regional budget, deploy resources and structure, develop and manage partnerships with allies and donors, and represent 350 externally with a range of audiences and constituencies. Reporting directly to the Global Program Director, the NA Director will build and strengthen a multiracial team responsible for organizing and mobilizing a multiracial base across the United States and Canada.

The North America Director will report to the Global Program Director, and will manage senior US and Canadian staff.

Key Areas of Ongoing Responsibility

  • Strategy and Program. The North America Director will drive the development and implementation of regional strategy in the context of 350’s global vision, mission and goals. They will ensure that 350’s programs and campaigns are designed, implemented, and evaluated through the lens of its equity and inclusion priorities.
  • Equity and Inclusion. The North America Director will serve as a key leader on 350’s ongoing racial equity and inclusion efforts, supporting the work of the Justice and Equity Manager, and advancing our goal of building a equitable, multiracial organization and base.
  • Management.  In collaboration with operations and program leadership, the North America Director will develop and implement regional management practices, tools, systems, and structures that ensure a highly-effective, goal-oriented, equitable organization.
  • Global Coordination. The North America Director will lead the coordination and collaboration between North American and global staff to provide North American contributions and perspectives and ensure productive relationships aimed at maximizing efforts to advance 350’s mission.
  • External Relations. The North America Director will serve as the lead regional representative with 350’s partners, allies, elected officials, media, local chapters, and other key stakeholders
  • Ideal Experience and Qualifications
  • Alignment with 350’s Mission, Vision, and Values.  The North America Director will have a deep commitment to building a global, multiracial organization and climate movement and a demonstrated commitment to the mission and goals of 350 combined with the ability to clearly articulate and demonstrate 350’s vision and beliefs, combined with a solid grasp of current issues.
  • Proven Leadership and Strategic Capabilities.  The North America Director will be an inspirational and motivating leader with a proven track record of successfully developing and leading organizational strategy that moves people toward a shared vision and drives toward organizational goals.  They will have the experience and ability to align campaigning, communications, digital and organizing approaches into effective strategies, tactics, and programs that advance 350’s work.
  • Campaign Experience. The North America Director will have significant experience in social justice, climate, labor, electoral, or community organizing, or other comparable work in a progressive movement building organization.  Experience planning and executing successful campaigns at the national and/or international lever is desirable.
  • Leadership on Racial Equity and Inclusion.  The North America Director will have highly developed racial equity analyses, skills, competencies, and practices and a sophisticated understanding of how racial dynamics impact organizational culture, supervisory relationships, partnerships, campaigns and coalition work.  A demonstrated history of successfully intervening in problematic dynamics and deepening a racial justice approach within an organization, team or campaigns is highly desirable.
  • Exceptional Management Skills.  The North America Director will have successful experience leading complex organizations and teams, with proven ability to supervise and develop staff and work effectively across teams; demonstrated exceptional critical thinking, judgment, and collaboration skills; and proven ability to take initiative, manage multiple projects, balance competing priorities, and make hard (and sometimes unpopular) decisions.  Experience gained in the context of an organization that has experienced rapid growth is especially valuable.
  • Strong Communication and Public Leadership Skills.  The North America Director will have highly developed oral and written communication skills, including superior listening and exemplary writing skills and the ability to communicate 350’s mission and vision in highly compelling ways that engage and motivate stakeholders, including partners, allies, and the general public.  Experience representing an organization in a variety of settings, ranging from small to high visibility mobilizations is desired
  • Financial Management Acumen and Fundraising Experience. The North America Director will have experience developing and overseeing multiyear organizational budgets and effectively managing and tracking financial resources.  Fundraising does not comprise a major responsibility of the Director, but successful experience in resource development is a plus.
  • Extensive Collaborative Experience.  The North America Director will have a strong network of relationships and a successful track record of building and leading diverse coalitions grounded in values and long-term vision that have resulted in expanding a set of stakeholders and partners and moving issues.
