- The Child Care Director will provide leadership and manage the day to day operations of the Youth Center childcare programs and services. Competent performance by the Child Care Director will result in an organized, meaningful and safe environment for all participants, according to the YMCA curriculum, goals and objectives and philosophies. The incumbent will develop staff to ensure continuity of program service delivery.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Plans, designs, evaluate and implement all aspects of the child care program in accordance with the YMCA of Greater Birmingham guidelines.
- Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values for the Afterschool Academy, Summer Day Camp, etc.
- Develops, implements, and monitor an annual budget; be responsible for all aspects of program development, quality and safety; recruit, train and supervise all paid and volunteer personnel.
- Serves as liaison to local schools and community groups to facilitate program development and ensure all staff maintain required training and certifications.
- Adheres to program standards including monitor and assist in maintenance, safety and cleanliness standards.
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
- Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
- Additionally, they will participate in branch special events including the Annual Campaign and increase program participants awareness of healthy lifestyle factors.
- Attends all staff meetings and required training programs.

Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, child development education or related field preferred.
Skills/Experience:
- Minimum age of 19 years old.
- Previous experience as a child care director is preferred.
- Supervisory and staff development experience required.
- Knowledge of budgets.
- Must be customer service focused with strong communication skills both orally and written with solid computer skills.
- Must be able to cultivate and develop community relationships and partnerships.
- Successful completion of background and Child Abuse and Neglect screening.
- Acquire and maintain the following certifications prior to start date via YMCA, American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Health and Safety Institute (ASHI):
- First Aid / CPR /AED (valid 2 years unless otherwise noted)
- Requisite Redwoods Online Training Modules (completed prior to start date and repeated annually).
- Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
- Ability to be physically active to include, but not limited to walking, sitting, squatting, standing, kneeling, climbing, running, lifting, pushing, pulling, etc.
- Must have the physical, visual and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
