- The Nature Conservancy’s Latin America Region is looking for an inspiring, creative, forward-thinking individual to server as Director of the Brazil Program. S/he will be a senior leader in the organization and a member of the Latin American Management Team and will work effectively with others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization. The person chosen for this position will be based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and will build, lead and manage programs in the Conservancy’s priority areas for biodiversity conservation in Brazil.
- The Director will lead a professional, 100-person team to implement conservation strategies in Brazil, working collaboratively with internal and external partners to achieve tangible conservation outcomes. S/he will an example of TNC’s Values and Competencies in action and will also guide the Conservancy’s growth into new areas of environmental sustainability, green growth, corporate practices/partnerships and leveraging funding to achieve systems transformation.
- A key assignment for this person will be to lead the engagement and ongoing operations of the Brazil Advisory Council, made up of 16 prominent local volunteer leaders who help to advance the Conservancy’s cause, including (but not only) philanthropically. Brazil’s Advisory Council holds four meetings a year and also works by means of functional and thematic committees, including Finance, Nominations, Philanthropy and Marketing, Water, Infrastructure, Sustainable Agriculture and Indigenous Lands.
- The director should be a dynamic, high-level strategic thinker, a great spokesperson, and an effective manager of people. She/he must be very familiar with Brazilian society and leaders. She/he should be comfortable working at the CEO and Ministerial level, preferably bringing previous experience working with a board. “Non-traditional” candidates – from the business world for instance – are welcome to apply. Past experience working on conservation and sustainability issues is helpful; a passion for the natural world is a must.
- The Director collaborates with other TNC units across our 4,000-person organization and beyond to find and deploy the human and financial resources needed to get conservation results. She/he should be an individual with high ethical standards and a track record for inspiring collective action to achieve tangible, lasting results. The Director raises program funds both in Brazil and in the United States, Europe and elsewhere from public and private sources, and oversees conservation operations, revenue and marketing. S/he must work collaboratively with regional strategy units in Water Security, Sustainable Food Security and Smart
- Infrastructure, as well as with other offices and programs across the Conservancy. S/he is accountable for the Program’s success and for maintaining strict adherence to organizational values.
- TNC’s primary offices in Brazil are in São Paulo, Brasilia and Belem, with additional staff located in other cities across the country.
- This position reports to the Regional Managing Director for Latin America.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Recruits, retains, and manages high quality and effective staff.
- Assumes overall responsibility for philanthropy activities and goals of the OU.
- Accepts philanthropic responsibility for organization-wide project/programs.
- Ensures that programmatic commitments, financial standards, and legal requirements are met.
- Assumes responsibility and leadership for conservation results for local, regional and global priorities.

- Proposes and implements procedures to enhance overall performance in accordance with short and long term objectives.
- Participates in the formulation and evaluation of broad policies and/or long-term programs, or making decisions, which typically have broad organizational impact.
- Directs major program of strategic importance to the Conservancy through management of multi-disciplinary teams.

- Ability to persuasively convey the mission & conservation priorities of TNC to diverse groups including major donors, corporate executives, board members, partners and others who are critical to the organization’s overall prosperity.
- Cultivates and develops constructive and effective relationships inside and outside the Conservancy.
- Communicates professionally with a wide variety of people of diverse cultural professional and economic backgrounds for the purpose of developing, negotiating and/or implementing programs and projects.
- Presents and represents the program and TNC’s vision in compelling, engaging manner to internal and external audiences as lead spokesperson; practices the Conservancy’s core values.
- Commands attention, can change tactics midstream, and manage group processes during presentations or discussions.
- Delivers effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to employee groups, managers at all levels, board members, and outside organizations.
- Exercises sensitivity to working in an advisory role with partner organizations.
- Directs, prepares, presents and/or participates in negotiations of project proposals with governmental, bilateral and/or multilateral agencies. Works well under pressure.
- Willingness and ability to travel routinely throughout the operating unit and elsewhere as required.
- Flexibility to work long hours during deadline periods.
- Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain. Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 7 years of experience as a leader in the conservation arena, non-profit sector, advocacy, or related for-profit area.
- Extensive and proven management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives, and manage performance of a large multi-disciplinary team.
- Written and verbal fluency in English and Portuguese is required.
- Superb communication and presentation skills required.
- Experience communicating with and presenting to diverse audiences including donors, board members, employees, outside partners, or equivalent.
- Experience in fundraising and budget management.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 7-10 years experience as a proven leader in the conservation arena, non-profit sector, advocacy, or related for-profit area, including demonstrated experience producing results and meeting program/department goals.
- Experience gained both in and outside the Brazil preferred. Demonstrated commitment to developing and practicing global literacy a must.
- Success as an inspirational leader who has successfully motivated staff to achieve and sustain excellence. Proven managerial talent in budgeting, staffing, and performance management.
- High energy, forward thinking, creative individual with high ethical standards. Outstanding leadership qualities and able to work effectively with and through others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization.
- Proven technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment, and strong operational focus.
- Personal alignment, and proven demonstration of TNC’s Values and Competencies.
- Well organized and self-directed; politically savvy and a team player.
- Successful experience in marketing or fund raising desired.
