The Nature Conservancy in Vermont has established two fellowship positions with the goal to create a cohort of graduates from underrepresented backgrounds who pursue careers in conservation, are prepared and competitive applicants for full-time regular service positions at other conservation organizations and agencies and can ultimately assume leadership positions in the field.   As a science-based organization, The Nature Conservancy consistently strives to base the management of our conserved lands on sound science.  The Restoration and Ecological Management Fellow will further this goal by monitoring our conserved lands and waters, compiling and analyzing data, assessing and prioritizing ecological management, and ultimately drafting management plans.  This is a two-year position, with preference given to recent graduates with a Bachelor’s degree.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Fellow may collect, assemble, manage and analyze conservation data, participate in conservation planning, produce reports,  prepare formal documentation of conservation real – estate transactions, respond to landowner inquiries and maintain manual project records.  Data collection may take place in the field or through compilation of existing information in the office.  Data analysis may include use of Arc GIS, Microsoft Excel and other data analysis software.  

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Supervises no staff but may oversee and direct work of office volunteers or interns.
  • Coordinates multiple tasks or projects in a timely manner and with attention to detail.
  • May assist with program budget preparation and monitoring.
  • The Conservation Fellow may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • This position may require travel and overnight travel, possibly for an extended period of time.  
  • Makes day to day decisions as delegated by the supervisor.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in natural resources management or related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Experience with Arc GIS  
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects
  • Experience handling standard business communications.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual, multi-cultural or cross-cultural background or experience appreciated including lived experience working across differences such as race, culture, disabilities, socio-economic class, language groups and economic sector.
  • Ability to complete tasks independently within assigned time frames.  
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, with assignments sometimes coming from a number of sources and work independently.
  • Ability to coordinate project information from a number of sources to populate databases, create reports and produce manual files.
  • Experience utilizing databases for data entry and report production preferred.
  • Strong administrative skills including attention to detail and numerical ability.  
  • Ability to plan, administer and record results of work-team meetings and activities.
