The Meadowlands Area YMCA is a rapidly growing and progressive Association. It is an exciting time in our 98-year history as our YMCA has developed an 83,000 square foot building into our first full facility YMCA which is considered “A Y Like No Other”. Located in Bergen County, New Jersey we are in the shadows of the Meadowlands Sports Complex (home to the NY Giants, NY Jets and the 2014 Super Bowl) and right outside of New York City.  

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Y’s Board of Directors seeks an experienced leader who has the requisite background and skills to achieve excellence in the following areas:

Continue Strengthening Operating Performance with a Focus on Membership & Program Expansion: 

  • Considered a “start-up”, assess all aspects of the current operation and create a plan that will continue to grow and retain members, expand facility and outreach programs, and implement/strengthen policies and procedures.  Successfully create and achieve plans, with measurable short and long-term goals.  

Lead and Build the Staff Team:

  • Serve as a leader who can hire, motivate, engage and reward staff in a positive and productive manner. Lead by example; remain actively engaged in staff performance and development leading to superior results in programs, member satisfaction and community outreach and engagement. Maintain a culture of integrity, high ethical standards, and values.

Create a Strategic Plan That Drives Innovation and Has Bold Impact:

  • Lead a collaborative process by involving various Y stakeholders to create and implement a strategic plan that aligns with the mission and vision of the organization. Serve as an innovator who drives bold impact to address the community’s critical social issues while positioning the organization for sustained success. Throughout the process, create strategic and successful relationships with influential leaders, potential donors, members and organizations in the community, with an eye toward leveraging those relationships that will be mutually beneficial to those involved.    

Fiscal Management: 

  • Use high level of financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth and stability, while consistently leading organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff leaders to lead their departments to successful financial operation. 

Lead Fundraising Efforts:

  • Serve as the leader in fundraising efforts by working with the board to establish a plan for how the Y will increase annual contributed dollars for operations and providing financial assistance as well as capital dollars to pay debt, build a facility reserve and establish an endowment program. Ensure public and private partnerships and resources are developed to support operational and future needs by instilling confidence, credibility, and trust in the Y with community leaders and donors. 
Educational Background: 
Accredited 4-year college degree (required/non-negotiable).
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization/company.
  • Proven successful track record of fiscal management for a complex organization with a budget of more than $5M annually.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
  • Proven ability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered and effective in broadening engagement in the community.
  • Experience in successfully leading a start-up non-profit/company.   
  • Demonstrated excellent leadership and communication skills (both written and verbal) as well as personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
  • Successful annual fundraising experience.
  • YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (Note: Candidates not in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain through Y-USA).
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary Range: $185,000-$210,000 (Salary commensurate with experience, with increases and incentives based on performance)   

Benefits:  Group Health Insurance (medical, dental, prescription, vision and life insurance)-basic coverage for employee provided (or may upgrade plan with co-pay). Family coverage available at employee’s expense. Lap top, cell phone, travel expenses.  YMCA pays 7% retirement contribution and employee contributes 5% per eligibility requirements (www.yretirement.org). Additional benefits per the personnel policy to be shared with final candidates.
