The Head of Development is the UN Foundation’s lead development executive and is responsible for retaining and increasing support from foundations, government/bilateral funders, the private sector, and individual donors. S/he will provide vision and leadership to the UN Foundation’s resource development strategy and activities, and will work in close collaboration with UN Foundation leadership to facilitate relationships that bring together partners and donors in support of the Foundation’s priority issues.

The Head of Development reports to the UN Foundation’s Chief Strategy Officer, and will work closely with the Chief Executive Officer, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, and other UN Foundation executive leadership on a regular basis.

S/he will support the achievement of the Foundation’s general operating and initiative-specific fundraising goals 1) with the support of a team of centrally-managed development professionals and 2) in partnership with a network of colleagues within the UN Foundation responsible for initiative-specific resource mobilization.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Strategy and Planning

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive resource mobilization plan that aligns fundraising goals to the Foundation’s mission.
  • Monitor, measure and evaluate the Foundation’s overall revenue pipeline, tracking progress toward the goals and working with development colleagues to ensure integration and accuracy in reporting.

Execution and Stewardship

  • Manage a portfolio of major foundation, corporate, individual, and governmental donors, implementing best practices in identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors and partners.
  • Lead a high-performing team of development professionals that supports the Foundation’s overall resource. mobilization priorities.
  • Implement coordinated research, application, tracking, and reporting processes for priority Foundation partners, while conducting stewardship and cultivation activities to build, maintain, and strengthen donor relationships.

Pan-Foundation Coordination

  • Work with UNF leadership to establish and maintain internal policies and behaviors that foster a thriving, integrated, donor-focused approach to resource mobilization.
  • Manage pan-Foundation infrastructure and systems to ensure individual initiative teams have the tools needed to coordinate effectively.
  • Serve as internal thought leader and advisor on resource development to initiative teams across the Foundation.

External Representation

  • Represent UNF at national and international philanthropic symposia and gatherings.
  • Build platforms and opportunities for UNF to gain recognition as an innovative leader in philanthropy.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 20 years experience in fundraising preferred, including demonstrated success stewarding major gifts across all donor segments.
  • Ability to cultivate relationships and engagement; have an extensive network of funders that s/he has worked with previously.
  • Proven experience navigating and relationship building within complex organizations, including track record of integration across teams.
  • Ability to both verbally articulate compelling cases for support and design and write strategic, compelling proposals.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team in a dynamic work environment.
  • Keen attention to detail; solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and develop short- and long-term development plans and strategies.
  • Computer proficiency with databases, spreadsheets, and word processing; Salesforce experience preferred.
  • Strong background in program planning and strategic initiative development. 
  • Strong leadership, administrative, and budgetary skills.
  • Must be able to work independently, adapt to changing priorities and multi-task to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.
  • Willingness to travel.
