Under the direction of the Associate Executive Director, the Aquatic Director will be responsible for leadership of all aquatic operations which includes related programming and staff (swim lessons, swim team, masters program, aquatic group exercise, community collaboration of pool programs, Waterwise, lap and family swim, Ellis Lifeguard Trainings, pool parties, staff and community CPR/First Aid. Incumbent is responsible for personnel and fiscal management, program and membership development, facility and risk management and member retention at two locations, Central and Walnut Street pools. Incumbent supervises the following aquatic leadership staff: pool supervisors/swim lesson leader, aquatic instructor trainer and senior lifeguards. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Develops, organizes and implements high quality, member-focused YMCA aquatic programs.
Personnel Management
- Must be able to lead by example the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
- Recruits, trains, supervises and evaluates all aquatic leadership staff.
- Supervises, supports, mentors & coaches the Aquatic Coordinator who oversees day to day management of Lifeguard Staff & Community based trainings.
- Hire, Schedule, Train, Encourage & Discipline swim team coaches & key swim team volunteers as well as other aquatic staff employees in the absence of the Aquatic Coordinator.
- Oversee the development, framework and sustainability of a swim team advisory committee that supports the YMCA of Delaware vision for competitive swimming.
- Evaluates and proposes staffing structural realignments as needed in the aquatic department.
- Develops and maintains an effective leadership team with high staff morale and low staff turnover.
- Fosters an environment in which staff members feel valued and receive recognition and positive reinforcement.
Program Development and Management
- Responsible for administration, development, delivery and promotion of all competitive based programs and instructional based programs, which includes age group swim team, masters program, aquatic group exercise classes, Waterwise, community partnerships and collaborations as well as group & private swim lessons.
- Responsible for all communication and marketing strategies that relate to aquatic programs and offerings, which include, Remind.com, YMCA of Delaware App, Website, Social Media, etc.
- Responsible for supportive oversight & promotion to the Aquatic Coordinator of all branch safety courses including CPR / First Aid / AED trainings for employees and community members.
- Responsible for tracking of all staff’s required CPR/First Aid trainings and alerts supervisors when staff are due to renew.
- Ensures all program offerings are available and up to date within the YMCA of Delaware member database (Protivity). Programs are properly posted on social media channels, website & YMCA of Delaware app as expected.
- Responsible for quality, appropriateness, cost effectiveness, growth and evaluation of all aquatic programs.
- Determines member needs and develops and directs programs to meet those needs.
- Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in program areas.
- Helps ensure implementation of the Association Strategic Plan.
- Reviews and evaluates the enrollments, programs, services and operations of the Aquatic Department, communicates these findings and makes appropriate recommendations and changes.
- Initiates new programs in harmony with Association and branch goals.
- Coordinates and participates in YMCA of Delaware Water Wise initiatives as well as future collaborations connected directly to the responsibility of the Branch.
- Provides support for collaborations that have been established with the local school district and community partners
- Provides support with the YMCA of Delaware Program Leadership Team to ensure yearly Chart of Work tasks are completed and initiatives support the Association Key Performance Indicators & Priorities for Aquatics across the organization.
Facility & Risk Management
- Responsible two indoor pools.
- Ensures that the pool is Ellis & Associates compliant in accordance with current Ellis & Associates Comprehensive Aquatic Risk Management Program Handbook.
- Works with Facility Supervisor, aquatic staff and the Association Director of Aquatic Safety & Compliance to ensure safety and cleanliness in the aquatic facilities. Share pool maintenance, daily chemical readings, temperature, ordering of supplies and cleanliness responsibilities with Facility Department.
- Utilizes Facility Dude on regular basis to request work orders relating to Aquatic & Facility needs
- Annually coordinate the indoor pools shutdown. In conjunction with supervisor, develops timeline, schedule, staffing and equipment needs and works closely with Facilities and Aquatic Staff to ensure smooth openings.
- Takes all precautions and preventative actions necessary to ensure the safety of members and staff at all times.
- Branch CPR/First Aid compliance leader. Tracking staff trainings and alerting of due to renew.
Fiscal Management
- Develops, monitors and is accountable for annual budget for all non-competitive & competitive aquatic programs and operations.
- Works with the Associate Executive Director to develop & monitor their yearly budgets
- Monitors monthly budgets, program attendance and projects year-end results.
- Keeps daily attendance records for preparation of monthly report.
- Provide monthly variance reports as requested to leadership team relating to all aquatic program budgets
- Member and Community Relationships
- Respond to members’ needs, requests and complaints, seeking to address situations as quickly as possible.
- Ensures pool schedules, program schedules, website & mobile app details are up to date
- Communicate regularly and efficiently with Member Service Leadership & Staff to ensure needed information for members & staff are available.
- Provide assistance and support to the Annual campaign. Develops and maintains effective working relationships within the community, captains a team of volunteers for community phase. Acts as chairperson for Staff Campaign.
- One to two years related experience preferred; for example, as an aquatics coordinator or supervisor.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Broad background in YMCA aquatic operations and program development and management.
- Required certifications include Ellis & Associates ILTP Lifeguard Certification.
- Proven track record of developing authentic and deepened relations; ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
- Must have or secure within one year Ellis & Associates ILTP Lifeguard Instructor.
Salary: $40,900.00 - $46,000.00
