Context: Works with chapter staff and volunteers to organize support for Clean Missouri and Raise Up Missouri initiative campaigns. Works with appropriate staff to recruit activists, organize outreach events, skills training and GOTV. Mobilizes Sierra Club members to vote, and educates the environmental community on ballot initiatives.
Scope: The Political Organizer implements the campaign. Conducts phone banking, and activist recruitment among Sierra Club members. Regularly works outside of the office and without direct supervision. Works with other Club staff as well as organizational allies to achieve goals.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Identifies, recruits, and organizes Sierra Club volunteers to mobilize members to vote.
- Works with others to devise strategy and recommend plan to reach out to Sierra Club members with conservation message around initiative measures.
- Uses VAN to obtain accurate voter registration information for Sierra Club members.
- Leads volunteer phone banks.
- Travels to organize grassroots events and to meet with targeted media, allies, or elected officials.
- Holds meetings among Sierra Club members in strategic communities to recruit and train for the campaign.
- Motivates members to become activists in Sierra Club Groups by advancing our environmental policy agenda among Sierra Club members.
- Cultivates a legacy of environmental activism in Missouri after the 2018 elections.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.
Skills/Experience:
- Some prior organizing or electoral experience
- Position requires extensive travel within Missouri. Applicants must have valid driver's license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, cooperatively and effectively with allies, media, staff and volunteers.
