Context: The Chapter Director, implements policies and programs adopted by the Chapter Executive Committee. Through consultation and coordination with the Chapter’s Volunteer Team Leaders, the Chapter Executive Committee and national Sierra Club, the Chapter Director ensures that staff and chapter resources are used efficiently to carry out the chapter’s programmatic goals.
Scope: Carries out the policies, priorities and objectives of the Executive Committee for the assigned areas of chapter programs and operations. As one of the most recognized voices of the chapter, the Chapter Director develops relationships with the media and organizational allies as well as cultivating fundraising contacts.
- Reports to and assists the Executive Committee, and Chapter Teams to develop the Chapter's short and long term strategic, programmatic and financial goals and objectives.
- In order to create a strong conservation program, the CD works with the Executive Committee and other volunteer leaders to strategically plan, engage the grassroots, and increase membership involvement.
- Communicates with all teams (e.g. Political/Legislative, Transportation, Climate Action Advisory Team, Woods Wildlife and Waters Team, Communication Team) in order to assure coordinated, programmatic success.
- Plans and implements an effective public relations program, develops contacts with the media to establish and maintain positive relations to maximize the chapter's credibility and position of issues.
- Develops and achieves the annual fundraising goals with the help of the Fundraising Team.
- Supports all teams to follow through on their strategic plans and priorities.
- Builds strong relationships with allies, elected officials, governmental agencies. Represents the Chapter when appropriate.
- Coordinates efforts with the national headquarters staff and ensures that the chapter strategies are in compliance with national requirements.
- Monitors all chapter activities in order to demonstrate engagement, effectiveness, and outcomes.
- Manages staff in assigned operational areas. Ensures efficient use of budgeted staff funds through accurate accounting and use of staff resources. Writes and conducts performance appraisals and takes personnel actions as appropriate. Ensures chapter is in compliance with Sierra Club’s employment policies and practices.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
- 3-5 years experience in effective grassroots organizing, training, and motivating volunteers, coalition building and lobbying.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Experience in communicating through social media across various platforms.
- Knowledge of broad environmental issues, including climate change, air and water pollution, and related fields as they relate to public policy. Willingness to become informed as needed.
- Knowledge of legislative and political processes.
- Ability to prepare and communicate a budget.
