Context: The goal of the Digital Communications Fellowship is to increase the effectiveness of the Washington State Chapter and Sierra Club campaigns in Washington in communicating to Sierra Club members, supporters, and the public. This position will amplify Sierra Club’s work and messaging by working with the Chapter Director, volunteer leaders, and Sierra Club staff to 1) develop new processes for coordinating and implementing digital communications priorities, 2) improve and enhance the chapter’s digital infrastructure, and 3) support organizing work in Washington by collaborating with staff to develop and implement digital outreach strategies.
Scope: Achieves the digital communications goals of the Chapter Executive Committee and the Sierra Club’s ongoing Washington State planning process, as directed by the Chapter Director. This is a full-time limited duration position for 12 months after the date of hire.
- Coordinates the production of a new chapter digital newsletter, which will be emailed monthly to chapter members, supporters, and local and state decision makers. Working with the Chapter Director and volunteer leaders, this coordinating work will include the recruitment of contributing writers, editing of content to achieve goals of focus, accuracy, timeliness, and effectiveness, the development of a workflow for producing and sending of the newsletter on schedule, and the sending of the newsletter using Sierra Club’s constituent relationship management system.
- Develop and post content for the chapter’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Work collaboratively with Sierra Club staff to develop a centralized posting schedule for social media content from both staff and volunteers, and ensure content is consistent with broader Sierra Club messaging goals and implemented strategically.
- Uses Sierra Club email/web/constituent relationship management system to develop lists, track and report results, write, target, and send emails, and link to appropriate web pages and social media content.
- Works with staff and volunteers to ensure consistent and effective messaging is employed across all communication tools, including the website, social media, newsletters, email alerts, and other materials.
- Advises and assists Sierra Club volunteer groups in using Sierra Club digital systems and tools to communicate build support for local campaigns and priorities.
- Assists organizing efforts in Washington State by collaborating with other staff to develop and implement outreach strategies, including online-to-offline integration of members and supporters interested in Sierra Club campaigns in the state.
- Miscellaneous duties, including donor communication, and other duties as assigned by the Chapter Director.
- Excellent writing and editing skills. Demonstrated skills in writing, production, and editing of articles, blog posts, website content, social media content, or campaign materials.
- Proficient computer skills and aptitude with internet applications, including email, constituent relationship management or other data systems, and web applications. Knowledge of Salesforce platform a plus.
- Working knowledge and familiarity with social media platforms, basic HTML, and desktop publishing software.
- Comfort and effectiveness in a deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a complex organization and adapt to new and developing workflows and processes.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented setting and effectively communicate with volunteers, staff, and the public.
- Ability to learn digital tools and best practices and train or advise staff and volunteers effectively.
- Familiarity with environmental policy and advocacy or Washington State politics desirable.
