- Strong writing skills with the ability to tell our story in a cohesive manner in a variety of media platforms both social media and traditional; use of those social platforms to generate earned media and tell stories in engaging ways; and demonstrates proficiency in targeting communications to multicultural audiences; not be afraid of experimentation
- Have the ability to evaluate, analyze and adjust strategies and tactics in real-time, in this fast paced environment.
- Maintain and develops strong relationships with members of the media, bloggers, influencers and key stakeholders.
- Be strong with and know numbers(analytics), understand what the metrics reveal to determine what is working and what is not
- Have the ability to define a clear social/digital strategy and stays close to state objectives
Areas of Responsibility:
- Serves as a member of the state communications team and responsible for contributing to the ideation, development and implementation of AARP’s integrated media, web and social media presence in communities. This includes the development and implementation of strategic plans and activities related to AARP NY priority issues, message development and strategic counsel for staff and volunteer team members.
- Develops social media plans communications that seamlessly integrate with AARP NY communications and its cross functional teams and enterprise priorities. strategies, as well as the state plan
- Proactively generates engaging and relevant content that connects to our audience in new and creative ways; leverages the immediacy of news and other information; effectively curtails negative press/trolling; manages overall reputation, image and brand of AARP on social platforms with protocol guideline set by the enterprise.
- Maintains an in-depth knowledge of AARP’s enterprise and NY state wide strategic goals, anticipating and addressing opportunities as they arise.
- Interfaces with national office and regional staff to promote AARP’s strategic issues and priorities, programs, and activities. Facilitates interaction and communication with national office issue experts to provide technical assistance and ensure the proper resources are available for staff and volunteers, including issue material, talking points, updates and briefing material.

- Cultivates and nurtures strategic relationships with collaborative organizations and influencers.
- Supports volunteers training, provides coaching and technical assistance in the areas of communications skill development to staff and volunteers. Assist volunteers with priority issues, strategies, tactics, policies and state specific political and communications processes in accordance with the National and State goals of AARP. Conducts volunteer recognition activities and events.
- In consultation with the Communication Director will manage paid social media budgets and duties related to branding, publications and digital processes within the states platforms
- Demonstrates AARP leadership behaviors at all times.
Educational Background:
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or a related discipline
Skills/Experience:
- 5 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.
- Demonstrates a strong understanding of social media, analytics,communications, and public relations.
- Strong and demonstrated writing skills.
- Bilingual abilities are a plus, not required
- Familiarity with state political environment and legislative process is a plus.
- In and out of state travel is required, approximately 30%. Night and weekend hours will be required to meet state office needs.
