The Francis Beidler Forest is an 18,500+ acre wildlife sanctuary and Nature Center.  It contains within its bounds, the largest remaining stand of virgin Bald Cypress and Tupelo Gum swamp forest anywhere.  There is a 1.75 mile boardwalk trail at the Center and it is open to the public.  The sanctuary exists to protect a large portion of Four Holes Swamp and the birds and other wildlife that call it home.  Beidler Forest is a National Natural Area as designated by the National Park Service, a globally significant Important Bird Area as designated by the American Bird Conservancy, and a Ramsar Wetland of International Significance as designated by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.  Sanctuary staff maintain the boundary lines and let nature take its course on most of the wetter parts of the property, but on upland edges of the swamp, various habitat restoration work is underway.  Usually this involves either the re-establishment of Longleaf pine forest or the creation of native plant grasslands.  The Assistant Land and Facilities Manager, will assist the Land Manager in conducting both the care of Beidler Forest buildings and other facilities, as well as assisting with critical activities on the intensively managed parcels of the sanctuary.
