The mission of the Music Studio at the Lynn YMCA is to give youth and teens the opportunity to build self-confidence and interpersonal skills, by learning how to play, perform, compose, and record music. The YMCA Music Studio Director will be leading a ground-breaking program by introducing musical instruments to youth and providing cutting edge electronic and digital formats to direct and produce music. The Music Studio in the YMCA is one of a variety of programs that the Y provides to youth in the city of Lynn. The key goal of the Music clubhouse program is to use music as a vehicle for developing academic and social skills, and ultimately build self-confidence and self-esteem. This role is both an effective leader of the Music clubhouse program AND a key member of the YMCA of Lynn staff.

This position will provide essential and critical leadership in PHASE II of the Lynn Y Construction project. In PHASE II, a new 3,800 square foot music studio will be built (based on funding) within the existing Lynn YMCA building. This transition from a 385 square foot studio to a 3,800 square foot studio will require someone will an acute sense of innovation, exceptional music knowledge, an outstanding ability to work with youth at all levels of music understanding and an organized multi-tasker willing to work hard for the organization for the benefit of the youth of Lynn. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Together with Senior Program Director and Executive Director, create/revise program curriculum with clearly-defined activities and realistic, measurable outcomes.
  • Provide leadership and insight in the development of the larger, more comprehensive YMCA music studio
  • Conduct on-going camps and clinics
  • Recruit performing artists to inspire and energize the studio environment
  • Develop partnerships that will utilize the studio during non-Y time and will enhance the outcomes and image with the city.
  • Create music mentorship program encompassing the LPS, Kipp Academy and St. Marys High school
  • Conduct outreach and recruitment within our programs and broader community throughout the year as necessary.
  • Lead weekly schedule of music instructional activities with small groups of youth, many with no previous musical experience.
  • Program & supervise daily drop-in times.
  • Create and implement regular showcase opportunities for Music Studio youth and coach youth to perform with confidence.
  • With other youth development staff, integrate Music Studio program and youth in YMCA annual signature events.
  • Supervise and discipline of youth participating in programs and services within the program area as well as throughout the clubhouse as deemed appropriate.
  • Coordinate volunteers and consultants who can offer related instruction, support and guidance to members.
  • Participate in program/service outcome measurement processes and other evaluations programs including YMCA’s annual evaluation Commitment to Quality.
  • Orient, train and supervise department staff (including work-study students, junior staff, volunteers). Provide annual performance evaluations for applicable staff in a timely manner.
  • Investigate technology and infrastructure improvements to better serve the participants
  • Secure, maintain and monitor budget, materials, equipment and other resources belonging to the program area(s). Maintain a safe and clean program area(s).
  • Participate in individual and group supervision sessions; participate in professional development opportunities as appropriate.

Other Duties:

  • Hours are non-traditional and reflect students’ out-of-school time.  Weekends and night are common requirements. 
  • Attendance and active participation in organization-wide meetings, programs and events.
  • Assist the organization (as needed) in the audio/visual needs for organization programs, initiatives and/or events.
  • Perform other assignments as designated by Senior Management in order to facilitate the most effective service to members, program participants, and the community.
  • Attendance and participation in Music &Youth Initiative programs, special events, professional development and reporting.
Educational Background: 
BA degree in engineering, music preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Multi-lingual candidates are encouraged to apply
  • Involvement with Youth Development programming in an urban setting
  • 2-4 years of developing and implementing programs for teenagers
  • Previous experience teaching music, supervising and project management skills a plus
  • Previous supervisory experience a plus
  • Project management experience a plus
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $42,000.00 - $50,000.00
