Senior Program Officer, Climate Cooperation and Sustainable Fuels

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a Senior Program Officer at our Washington, DC office. Under the supervision of the Deputy Director, International Climate Cooperation, the Senior Program Officer will work to drive several key initiatives of the Climate team portfolio. The main initiative this person would help drive is the Aviation and Climate Program, with a special focus on the program’s sustainable aviation fuels sub-initiative. This position will also support the work of the Alliances for Climate Action, the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance, and Renewable Thermal Collaborative.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Aviation and Climate Program

  • Works with the Deputy Director for International Climate Cooperation to support the Aviation and Climate Program (AvClim). Leads knowledge management for the International Coalition for Sustainable Aviation (ICSA), supports ICSA coordination and, leads special projects as agreed with the Deputy Director.
  • Leads the AvClim sustainable aviation fuels sub-initiative including strategy development.
    • Advocates in the ICAO Alternative Fuels Task Force for robust environmental integrity of all CORSIA Eligible Fuels (whether fossil, waste, or bio-based feedstocks)
    • Coordinates ICSA policy and technical position development on aviation fuels 
    • Develops communication products for technical and general audiences

Supporting other Climate Team priorities

  • Provides technical and coordination support to WWF offices who are implementing the Alliances for Climate Action (ACAs), the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA), and/or the Renewable Thermal Collaborative (RTC).
  • Conducts applied research, both substantive and operational, that is necessary to advance the implementation of ACAs, including the sound design and implementation of international and national climate actions (policies and measures) intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for climate impacts.
  • Develops technical/policy and communications briefs, as well as operational guidelines for the implementation of ACAs, REBA, and/or the RTC.
  • Develops and implements workshops, briefings, and other events aimed at advancing ACAs, REBA, and/or the RTC.
  • Oversees consultants and/or interns that support the implementation of specific ACAs, REBA, and/or the RTC, as appropriate.

Other/Cross-cutting Tasks

  • Represents WWF-US at meetings with the key US Government agencies, with key stakeholders in Congress, within the NGO community, with the general public, and within the WWF Network as appropriate.
  • Helps develop fundraising proposals and implements oversight of new and ongoing projects and grants as they related to AvClim, ACAs, REBA and RTC. Works with project personnel, grantees, consultants, and others to facilitate coordination, communication, and regular reporting. Develops and analyzes project work plans and grant budgets.
  • Onboards and manages interns to support the SPO’s work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
A Bachelor’s degree is required ideally in a related field is such as environmental policy, sustainability management, environmental science, international relations, government policy, international development, conservation policy, or natural resources
Skills/Experience: 
  • A graduate degree in the same fields of study is preferred.
  • Position requires a minimum of six years of experience working on relevant topics. Topics that can count towards this six years include the following climate and energy sub-fields fields is an added asset: aviation and climate policy, bioenergy or fuels sustainability policy, life cycle assessment, aviation or aerospace engineering, the Marrakesh Partnership and other efforts to understand and/or mobilize non-state actors, multi-stakeholder engagement, UNFCCC negotiations, US climate national policy, renewable electricity policy, climate economics, international climate finance, corporate climate strategy. A graduate degree in a related field of study may substitute for up to 2 years of experience
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Strong analytical skills. Social science or economic modelling and analysis skills an added asset but not required.
  • Ability to operate with independence, under pressure, to meet deadlines and commitments
  • Ability to work on initiatives with multiple and competing priorities
  • Team player and good interpersonal skills
  • Professional fluency in a language other than English (e.g. Spanish, French, and Mandarin) is an added asset but not required.  
  • Must be willing to travel internationally, as well as within the US
