As a leading state program of the National Audubon Society, Audubon New York (Audubon NY) leads our network of 50,000 members, 27 local Audubon Chapters, seven sanctuaries and nature centers and our thousands of annual visitors, volunteers, and partners throughout the state. The Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center (TRSAC), located in Oyster Bay, was established in 1923 as the first Audubon Songbird Sanctuary in the nation. Today, it is a vibrant resource offering a wide variety of activities, including environmental education, wildlife research, and conservation advocacy. The goal of the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center is to provide high-quality effective environmental education programs to all audiences.
Reporting to the TRASC Education Manager, the Educator is responsible for all aspects of planning, developing and presenting quality programming to participants that is aligned with Audubon’s Strategic Plan and Audubon New York’s Strategic Implementation Plan. S/He is also responsible for maintaining positive relationships with program participants and community members.
- Implement and lead environmental education and other outdoor recreation programs for families, adults and children at TRSAC and at off-site locations in surrounding communities, including all aspects of programming, planning, creating lesson plans, set up and clean up, evaluation and follow up. Types of programs include, but are not limited to: public programs, summer and vacation camps, school programs, field trips, after-school programs, outreach programs and teacher training workshops.
- Maintain existing contacts and develop new relationships with teachers, community groups and individuals. Communicate with school and group staff regarding program scheduling and other needs.
- Interact and collaborate with multiple audiences: staff, Audubon members, teachers, visitors and volunteers. This may include answering phones, opening/closing responsibilities on weekdays and some weekends, and organization of materials and programming space.
- Assist with volunteer training and facilitation in order that volunteers can independently conduct programs on behalf of Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center.
- Articulate the mission of Audubon to the program participants.
- Other duties as assigned by the Education Manager.
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse groups of children, adults and families.
- Ability to teach in an active and physical environment.
- Knowledge and commitment to the conservation of birds, other wildlife and their habitats, as well as basic knowledge of natural history and environmental science.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills.
- Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional nights and weekends.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one by hire date.
- Demonstrated interest in conservation and the mission of the National Audubon Society.
