The Research Assistant works closely with other staff to research and gather conservation planning data.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Research Assistant – Northeast Minnesota will assist in measuring forest vegetation and site conditions in northeastern and northcentral Minnesota.  Work will focus on collecting baseline and post-treatment forest vegetation data on recently planted and managed sites, monitoring forest restoration treatments, and other projects as directed.  The RA-NEMN will work with other Conservancy staff in the Northeastern Minnesota Program; will be supervised by the Forest Ecologist but will supervise no staff.  This is a full-time short term position from September 17, 2018 to November 9, 2018

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Perform fieldwork.             
  • Compiles data, resolves disparities and modifies processes to generate plans.                                          
  • May work with a small group of staff, interns or volunteers on a project basis.                                           
  • Will work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in science related field and 1-year experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience with GIS software and data to create maps.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience appreciated
  • Field Experience in vegetation sampling and plant identification
  • Ability to navigate in forested lands with GPS, compass, maps and aerial photography.
  • Experience utilizing ARCGIS software and data
  • Experience managing databases and producing reports.
  • Ability to work in rugged terrain under adverse conditions.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary - $12.50 to $15.50 per hour depending on experience
