AmeriCorps Urban Conservation Associate

The Urban Conservation Associate will focus primarily developing the Urban Conservation program identifying urban conservation opportunities and engaging urban communities to participate in targeted conservation projects in the Wilmington area, thus building our organization’s capacity to accomplish its mission.

This position is part of the Public Allies AmeriCorps Program in Delaware. The Public Allies AmeriCorps program is a national movement committed to advancing social justice and equity by engaging and activating the leadership capacities of our young people.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serve a community organizer in the West Center City neighborhood and engage residents and community in greening efforts lead by The Nature Conservancy. Activities may include but not limited to: meeting with local partners, attending community meetings, giving presentations and outreach to schools, libraries, faith institutions and other community organizations and leaders. 
  • Coordinate the LEAF youth internship program in Delaware with TNC staff and partners
  • This position begins September 1, 2018 and ends June 30, 2019.
Educational Background: 
Be a high school graduate or have a GED certificate.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Be 18 years old, or older.
  • U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
  • Must successfully pass a background check.
  • Be committed to the Public Allies Delaware AmeriCorps program, meeting its graduation requirements, and its ethic of service and personal and professional development of its participants.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience building relationships with diverse populations, including immigrant or refugee populations, seniors, people of color, people with disabilities, or those with limited economic resources.
  • Experience working community events
  • Desire to promote environmental stewardship to underserved communities.
  • Demonstrates independence, motivation and resourcefulness.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines and strong attention to detail.
  • A cooperative manner and the ability to serve as part of a diverse team.
  • Ability to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying.
  • Regular and reliable attendance and dependability.
  • Interest or experience in natural resources/conservation.
  • Experience managing projects and supervising volunteers.
  • Background in cultural competency.
  • Familiarity with the region and green spaces is helpful, but not required.
  • Familiarity with low-income communities and/or communities of color.
  • Any combination of experience and education equivalent to 2 – 4 years.
