The Managing Director, Development will report directly to the Executive Director. You will collaborate with senior leadership, board members, and external partners to build a foundation for our future work. You are responsible for developing a diverse and sustainable individual, corporate, foundation, and public funding base throughout Nevada that meets our annual development goal ($8.2m with $5m committed already in Fiscal Year 2019). Further, you manage our external affairs work in coordination with the Executive Director in order to build lasting partnerships with key statewide leaders from the Governor’s Office to our social media presence. In order to excel at these tasks, you must internalize and evolve our case for support that is deeply rooted in the mission of achieving educational equity and excellence.
The Managing Director, Development provides an unparalleled opportunity for individuals with annual giving and major gifts fundraising experience and the development acumen to successfully identify, cultivate, secure, and steward high-capacity prospects and donors. You will build strong and sustainable relationships and have the capability to interact with within all levels of the organization and external constituents. As the manager of 3 staff members, you must be a strong strategic planner and coach to your team.
Major Gifts & TFA-LVV Board Portfolio Lead (40%)
- Owns a portfolio of 30-40 major donors. As they currently owns a portfolio of 2-4 critical foundations and 5-10 major donors, they need to grow these gifts in the coming years to reach the goal of diversifying our giving. You will act as the primary point of contact and solicitor when appropriate to cultivate and steward the experience of our supporters.
- Builds donor investment in our mission with a focus on upgrades and multi-year commitments for long term supports.
- Supports the Executive Director in leading the TFA-LVV Board work and maintaining relationships with key funding partners on our board, including chairing the Development sub-committee and presenting regular fundraising / external affairs updates to our Board.
Development & External Affairs Team Strategic Planning & Management (20%)
- Leads, manages, directs the development team so that they meet their individual goals and the team meets its collective goals ($8.2m in FY19). Leads team to set the development goal in future years.
- Manages and supports a Director, Individual Giving & Foundations, Manager, Corporate and Public Partnership, and Manager, Communications and Development Operations.
- Develops multiple narratives using TFA-LVV’s Case for Support that strengthens the region’s ability to cultivate prospects and transform prospects into donors.
- Oversees the planning of our central campaigns and solicitation strategies that diversifies our funding base and strengthens existing donor relationships.
- Leads in-depth research and analysis of new and existing donors, to inform strategy for influencing, motivating and inspiring donors to contribute to our work and to grow and diversify our current giving portfolio.
- Directs external communications about Teach For America’s vision, priorities, and goals, including written appeals, renewal notices, reports, proposals, event invitations, social media, website, and other external engagements.
Management of Cultivation, Stewardship and Events (20%)
- Owns the vision, management, and execution of a signature event that improves donor appreciation, increase brand awareness, and grow events as a stream of funding.
- Leads the team to strengthen donor experience and increase their strength of relationship to TFA. Ensures that TFA donors feel like part of the network solving for educational equity and are unique in each of their contributions.
- Communicates the necessity for funding education leadership with a strong ability to share TFA’s vision, priorities, and goals.
- Utilizes Salesforce (TFACT- our CRM) and keeps it updated and clean at all times.
- Manages team to ensure timely processing and prompt acknowledgment of donations.
General Leadership & Regional Team Responsibilities (20%)
- As a senior leader of the team, the MD, Development will be a visible part of the community, alongside the Executive Director, and will represent TFA at community, government, philanthropy, and leadership opportunities.
- Supports, attends, and/or participates in all assigned regional and development team activities, including corps member selection and matriculation, full staff corps-facing events like All Corps Conferences and Induction (including weekends), staff meetings, functional team meetings and retreats, and more.
- Supports, leads, and manages all shared development team responsibilities, including board meetings, school visits, etc.
- Track record of fundraising multi-million dollar campaigns for at least 3-5 years
- People management experience required
- Knowledge of the philanthropic landscape in Las Vegas preferred
