The Global Managing Director, Water is accountable for a portfolio of multiple (3 or more) organizational level strategies that support TNC’s global challenges as noted in the Shared Conservation Agenda.  S/he will lead the Global Freshwater Team providing strategic leadership, management and support for freshwater conservation to establish TNC as a global leader in sustainable water issues. S/he will serve as a member of the Executive Leadership Team.

Areas of Responsibility: 

As a leading conservation spokesperson for the Conservancy, the Global Managing Director represents the Conservancy internally and externally to an array of audiences, advocating for and raising the visibility of organizational global priorities with a focus on our freshwater work. S/he works on a global scale and is responsible for fundraising in the public and private sector to ensure that sufficient resources are available to accomplish the Conservancy’s overall strategic goals and those related to the Global Water priority. S/he will also provide the overall coordination of water conservation initiatives across the organization including building capacity to support high priority work.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Direct leadership for the design and implementation of long term global water strategic plans, goals and objectives.
  • Plays a key role in fundraising for the global water priority and represents the organization. 
  • May play a leading role in donor identification and cultivation.
  • Geographic and programmatic size and scope is that of a large, globally complex business unit which spans multiple countries. 
  • Responsible for annual budgets and progress against annual goals and objectives.    
  • Leads and manages a highly matrixed team that consists of multi-disciplinary staff who may possess worldwide expertise in a variety of freshwater conservation areas.     
  • Responsible for performance management and coaching of staff members.                
  • May play leading role in managing major public agency and elected official relationships.
  • Works with key partners to develop and communicate solutions and best practices.
  • Oversees the development of innovative scientific methods, analysis, tools and frameworks to advance and measure the global water priority. 
  • Negotiates complex and innovative solutions with various parties.
  • Provides mechanism for organization wide dialogue, learning and capacity building on global priority issues.
  • Travel extensively within the US and abroad, sometimes for long periods of time, including evening and weekend work.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Experience working with current trends and practices in area of global priority, including a diversity of challenges across multiple global geographies. 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in business, law, natural resource management or other relevant field
Skills/Experience: 
  • 10+ years’ experience, including 5 years’ experience at a senior level in international conservation field, or equivalent combination.
  • Graduate degree in business, law, natural resource management and/or other relevant field.
  • Experience in partnership development (corporations, community leaders, governments, non-profit organizations, etc.) in multiple countries; experience with high-level government and conservation contacts.
  • Experience in linking science, policy and practice to achieve tangible conservation and policy outcomes.
  • Experience working collaboratively with interdisciplinary senior leadership
  • Experience in leading and managing a large multi-disciplinary team, including managing senior level leaders.
  • Experience in evaluating and/or negotiating complex, high profile or sensitive agreements.
  • Experience working with the politics, society and environmental community on a global, international scale.
  • Experience communicating with and presenting to diverse audiences including donors, board members, employees, outside partners, or equivalent.
  • Experience in fundraising, including cultivation of major donors.
  • Fluency in English, written, spoken and graphical means.
  • Politically savvy.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi- lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical and business innovations for conservation purposes.
  • Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives and business / management experience conceiving and implementing strategic initiatives.
  • Experienced in systems thinking and leadership.
  • Knowledge of diversity and inclusion initiatives in the workplace.
