The Media Relations Manager will develop and implement innovative media strategies and campaigns that contribute to a well-defined media presence on AARP’s strategic priorities in the consumer healthcare and health policy spaces. The successful candidate will support AARP’s reputation, priorities and internal clients by drafting and implementing plans, growing and developing strong media relationships, pitching stories and op-eds, handling media events, and so on.  The successful candidate will track/provide analysis of relevant news stories, produce reports for leadership, and draft/edit news releases, talking points, blog posts, story pitches, and other content.  Significant demonstrated experience in public affairs and public policy-oriented communications is important.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop media strategies and tactics
  • Write/proof/edit news releases, media advisories, talking points, blog posts and other content
  • Field media requests from national, trade, specialty and new media outlets, and develop media relationships
  • Write strong, effective pitches and pitch stories to a wide range of national, trade, specialty and new media outlets.  Demonstrate sound news judgment
  • Track relevant news coverage to ensure the AARP leadership and the media team are aware of developing stories
  • Work with subject matter experts on interview preparation, briefings and media requests
  • Prepare performance and after-action reports using key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Support internal clients
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, political science or equivalent and 6+ years of job-related experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Demonstrated commitment to public advocacy
  • Demonstrated ability to work and thrive in a dynamic/fast-paced work environment.  Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects, assignments and deadlines is vital
  • Significant demonstrated experience pitching media outlets
  • Excellent writing and editing skills required. Demonstrated experience writing/editing news releases, talking points, blog posts and fact-sheets
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) as well as Cision or other similar platforms
  • Prior experience with Google Analytics or similar tools
  • Prior experience with consumer healthcare and knowledge of healthcare system
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with cross-functional teams
