Editor I/II/III – Weekend Edition

Weekend Edition is seeking a skilled, creative journalist to become a member of the Weekend Edition team.  The Editor develops timely, original program content for Weekend Edition. The Editor writes and edits scripts for broadcast and updates breaking news. He/She will also plan and manage large packages, projects and initiatives such as series and host field trips.  The Editor also provides support for the host in preparing for interviews, and editorial guidance and mentoring for production staff.  

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Tracks ongoing flow of news and recommends specific stories and areas of coverage, generating assignments for self and others.
  • Assists in program/coverage planning.
  • Conceptualizes, writes and edits news and feature content, for on-air and online.
  • Responsible for editorial integrity and quality of air product, ensuring that all materials on air and online meet NPR standards and practices.
  • Works with Digital Media to ensure the program is pro-active in developing creative Web content.
  • Maintains internal relationships with other members of the program staff and contributors and with other NPR program and desk staffs.
  • Maintains external relationships with information and program suppliers such as sources, freelancers and experts, member station news staff and journalists from other media.
  • Works various shifts, as assigned
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including the possibility of newsroom rotations to support other NPR news magazines, newscast unit, news gathering desks, programming or other editorial teams as required.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, or writing-intensive discipline and/or equivalent work experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and disseminate information and to coordinate news coverage.
  • A broad range of general news knowledge.
  • Demonstrated writing ability.
  • Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously and changing priorities/conditions.
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
  • Demonstrated strong interest in digital media.
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
  • Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.

Skills for Editor I:

  • At least four years of experience as a reporter, editor, or producer.
  • Demonstrated ability to edit news copy.
  • At least one year of experience in editorial decision-making.

Skills for Editor II:

  • At least six years of experience as a reporter, editor, or producer.
  • Thorough knowledge and demonstrated skill in news-writing techniques.
  • Considerable skill in feature and copy editing.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in editorial decision-making.
  • Understanding of journalistic ethics.

Skills for Editor III:

  • At least eight years of experience as a reporter, editor, or producer
  • Expertise in editing series, special projects and long-term features.
  • Experience in editorial decision making with demonstrated ability to exercise solid, independent news judgment.
  • Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
  • Skill in oral presentation.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working in and/or knowledge of public radio and the public radio system
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and familiarity with, social media platforms
  • Expertise in editing shows under breaking news conditions.
  • Broadcast experience.
  • Experience in Digital Media, CMS.
  • Knowledge of audio production.
  • Experience editing on digital audio workstations
