Group Fitness Director

Under the supervision of the Vice President of Program and Member Services, this position will oversee, coordinate and provide direct leadership to the Group Fitness programs to include both Land and Water group fitness programs, Fit Camp, FOGA and other special events.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Program Operations:

  • Provides leadership to group fitness instructors with hiring, scheduling, evaluating, training and coaching to reach high quality programming.
  • Maintains and develops new group fitness class formats, analyzing their financial viability
  • Maintains and monitors financial budgets of each area of responsibility, in conjunction with the Vice President of Member Services and the Vice President of Finance
  • Develops relationships/partnerships with key stakeholders in the community to ensure resources for YMCA programs
  • Instructs group fitness classes as needed.
  • Attends Membership Committee meetings and Board of Directors meetings as needed
  • Monitors and tracks data/participation for classes and analyzes for needed changes
  • Assures the coordination and maintenance of the group fitness schedules to ensure adequate coverage for YMCA members
  • Proactively works with member comments and concerns considering the overall Group Fitness department and what is best for the overall program
  • Oversees FOGA, Fit Camp and other special events
  • Liaison for Les Mills and other contracted group fitness programs
  • Implements and oversees program evaluation to guarantee faithfulness to YMCA purpose, high quality and maintenance of YMCA standards
  • Oversees the maintenance and upkeep of the Group Fitness department manual
  • Researches and purchases quality and efficient Group Fitness equipment for the YMCA sites, and develops a long term replacement plan
  • Oversees routine maintenance of equipment for safety and proper functioning in a timely manner and works cooperatively with the Building Facilities’ staff
  • Provides member education at YMCA facilities on group fitness related topics
  • Markets new and current programs with the Marketing Director
  • Provides certification trainings at our sites so staff can maintain or gain new certifications
  • Develops and organizes workshops, special events and master classes
  • Organizes and oversees community and corporate group fitness promotions, seminars and health fairs
  • Coordinates member education at all facilities on fitness related topics
  • Organizes special events to advertise and raise funds for FOGA or other special events.
  • Investigates and organizes various Community Outreach projects such as the Cass-Clay Healthy People Initiative

Supervisory Duties:

  • Interviews, hires, and trains new staff.
  • Completes payroll forms for new hires, changes, terminations etc. accurately and timely
  • Reviews time clock punches of staff for accuracy and submits reports to payroll by deadline
  • Schedules and conducts Stay Interview sessions with staff throughout the year in order to strengthen their engagement and retention within the YMCA.
  • Schedules and conducts Coaching sessions and Performance Improvement Plans as needed with staff throughout the year in order to assist staff in understanding performance issues and expectations.
  • Schedules and conducts Performance Evaluations with Full Time staff each year and submits the Evaluation and Change Form to Human Resources by deadline.
  • Has positive, open communication with staff and serves as a resource to them
  • Holds staff meetings with staff as needed.
  • Assures required licensures of staff are up to date as required.
  • Develops and implements uniform staff training and development for staff.
  • Assures the coordination and maintenance of staff schedules. Fills in when necessary

 Financial Administration:

  • Submits billing requests accurately and timely; assures budget is maintained

 Other:

  • Works appropriate hours to get work completed accurately and timely and assure that department is running smoothly.
  • Attends mandatory departmental meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Maintains a neat and clean work area, free of hazards.
  • Follows YMCA policies and departmental procedures.
  • Wears name tag at all times.
  • Follows all emergency and safety procedures
  • Other duties upon request by immediate supervisor.
Educational Background: 
4 year Bachelor’s Degree in a directly related field and 2 years of supervisory experience OR
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 21 years old
  • 4 years of directly related experience, training and/or education and 2 years of supervisory experience 
  • Group Fitness Certifications in both Water & Land in a mode that is taught at the YMCA of Cass and Clay Counties
    Required Within a Specific Time Frame:
  • Within 1 month of hire: CPR/AED Certification for Adult, Child, and Infant
  • Within 1 month of hire: First Aid Certification
  • Within 6 months of hire: YMCA Healthy Lifestyle Principles.

Other Important Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience in managing the facilities, equipment resources and programs of the department for the delivery of the best possible programs.
  • Experience in setting up certification trainings for large numbers of employees.
  • Positive, effective, calm and professional communication – verbally and written - with staff, children, parents and others – tailoring the communication style to the appropriate audience
  • The ability to work effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions
  • High organizational skills balancing multiple tasks.

  • Proficient use of computers with working knowledge of Excel, Word and E-mail
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $47,000.00 - $55,460.00
