The Northeast Ohio Facilities Technician is a part time position based in Rock Creek Ohio. The Facilities Technician performs and participates in the operation, maintenance and management of the facilities and grounds at Conservancy preserves in Northeast Ohio. This position includes housing at Grand River Conservation Campus as the Northeast Ohio Facilities Technician is required to live on-site.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Northeast Ohio Facilities Technician maintains the facilities and areas frequented by the visiting public at the Grand River Conservation Campus and other Conservancy preserves in Northeast Ohio. They provide maintenance, service and repair of the buildings, property infrastructure, grounds, and equipment including plumbing, electrical, construction, carpentry, concrete, heating/cooling, and monitoring of wastewater treatment and drinking water treatment infrastructure. They prepare facilities/grounds for visitors, events and programming; provide assistance for the Dr. James K. Bissell Nature Center, its volunteers, educational programs and recreational projects; and assist in developing opportunities and establishing priorities for Campus.  They coordinate with contractors completing major repairs or routine contractors performing operation of wastewater treatment plant, cleaning, plowing and road repair.  They maintain tools, equipment and facilities records. They may also assist in performing land management activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including staff, contractors, volunteers.  
  • Maintains campus and other preserve areas, trails and amenities frequented by the visiting public.
  • Maintains presence at the Campus to address maintenance/other problems in a timely manner and prevent and quickly address destructive activities including vandalism, or unauthorized use of building, trespassing, poaching, theft or trash dumping.   
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Uses and maintains tools and equipment.
  • Operates heavy machinery such as tractors
  • Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.                                                                                           
  • May require long hours in isolated settings.                               
  • Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.                                                                                                  
  • May work under infrequent supervision.
Educational Background: 
High school diploma or GED and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.        
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).                        
  • Experience working in a team environment.                                            
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. Youth Safety, First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 1 - 2 years’ experience in land management or related field.  
  • Experience working with electrical, plumbing, welding, and concrete                   
  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.   
  • Ability to obtain driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
  • PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.
  • Experience developing work plans, and maintenance schedules.
  • Experience recordkeeping
