The Data Operations Manager is responsible for managing the complete lifecycle of data stored in strategic business applications at National Geographic Society, ensuring that sufficient levels of data quality, reliability, and accessibility are established and maintained to support the organization’s need for data-driven decision making and insights.

These responsibilities include maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the organization’s data, how they flow among internal and external systems and how they can be leveraged to improve organizational performance. Responsibilities also include advising on or overseeing data collection practices and the design of technical interfaces to ensure data quality/hygiene and compliance with data governance policies.

Additionally, this role will ensure inter-system data mapping and integrations documentation is complete and current.

The Data Operations Manager will participate in data access and security initiatives. He/she will manage data destruction policies and procedures including compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and best practices.

Additional responsibilities include working with business units, product managers and technical leads on the development of scheduled and ad-hoc reports, dashboards, visualizations or other data analyses, including the review and certification of select reports created by non-technical end-users.

The position will cultivate subject matter expertise in data management disciplines, platforms and applications, sharing knowledge with technical and business counterparts as appropriate through documentation, training, and relationship building.

Works with solutions architects, technical leads, system administrators, consultants, and vendors to build, configure, test and implement data management and infrastructure solutions that meet the organization’s business needs and are aligned and consistent with corporate security policies, enterprise IT strategies and plans. This role will take ownership of incident tickets and service requests as needed, and work with end-users and IT staff for resolution/fulfillment.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Oversees Data Management Practices (40%). Serves as the central point of contact and subject matter expert for the organization’s data management operations, including collection/retention/disposal practices, quality control/hygiene, access and sharing controls.  Develops, monitors and enforces compliance with policies and standards for data governance, hygiene, and handling. Establishes, maintains and drives the organization’s master data management plan and processes. Serves as subject matter expert in applicable data compliance practices for operational systems including adherence to organizational and regulated policy (e.g., GDPR, CAN-SPAM). Develops and maintains data management artifacts as appropriate including data mapping matrices, data flow diagrams, data dictionaries, and taxonomies.
  • Drives Realization of Value from Data (40%).  Provides hands-on data analysis and advisory services, working with product managers and technical leads and directly with stakeholders to ensure technical solutions support business-driven KPI measurement as well as delivering routine and on-demand reports, visualizations and dashboards.  Mentors and trains appropriate non-technical staff to embed and build basic competency in data access and analysis, devoting distinct workstreams to regular and frequent interaction with targeted business units.
  • Ensures Data Quality in Technical Delivery (20%) Works with technical leads to ensure data mapping matrices and taxonomies are developed with completeness and quality and as necessary, develops them directly alongside subject matter experts within the business.  Advises technical leads on the development and maintenance of automated integrations, data loads, and data hygiene/deduplication processes. Advises business data owners on manual data grooming practices. Works with technical leads to ensure data management practices are consistent with the master data management plan within platform ecosystems.  Maintains a cross-platform perspective and ensures appropriate data management and planning across platform ecosystems.. Ensures that software is designed and implemented to properly capture and store data in ways that support access and analysis by business units.  Works closely with the information security team to ensure that appropriate risk-based controls are applied to data across all systems and operations.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related discipline, or equivalent experience. ITIL v3 certification a plus.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 7 years professional experience with increasing levels of responsibility for data lifecycle management, quality control and governance, as well as data integration and analysis using both enterprise tools and scripted/automated approaches.  
  • Experience with CRM databases and the non-profit industry highly desirable.
