Somerset County YMCA is seeking a dynamic, highly motivated, proven cause-driven leader for a tremendous career opportunity leading successful operations for a growing $21 million dollar organization. Somerset County YMCA is undergoing an $11 million dollar capital reinvestment project across multiple braches, while exploring new growth opportunities and sustaining the needs of our existing 26,000 members across the county. The Chief Operations Officer must be a team motivator with an ability to create an environment that cultivates a culture of program innovation, staff development and fiscal responsibility.   

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Supervises branch executive directors to assure sound operations.
  • Provides leadership and direction to the branches by coaching branch executives and by providing overall direction to the branch boards and volunteers.
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions with staff, volunteers, members, and the community.
  • Develops, monitors and manages branch operating budgets to assure that revenue targets are met or exceeded and expenses are controlled.
  • Ensures the operational growth of the YMCA through program expansion and innovation, member recruitment, retention, pricing strategies, new site development, collaborations, and mergers and acquisitions.
  • Identifies potential areas for branch cooperative programming to accomplish YMCA goals (i.e. quality teams), and works with staff groups to develop and implement programs.
  • Fosters a climate of innovation to develop member-focused programs and leads branch staff in the planning, development and implementation of new program initiatives and activities.
  • Provides reports to committees, the Board of Directors and the President/CEO.
  • Provides staff leadership to assigned committees of the Board of Directors.
  • Implements and oversees a program evaluation system to ensure commitment to the Y’s cause and high quality standards.
  • Develops performance indicators and measurement systems for tracking strategic plan objectives.
  • Achieves branch annual fundraising goals.
  • Ensures the safety and maintenance of facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Represents the YMCA with key community organizations and events as required.
  • Serves as a member of Y management and supports the overall objectives of the YMCA.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in human services, business, social services or equivalent from an accredited 4-year college or university.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 10 years of demonstrated success in YMCA operations or related work.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce positive results in the areas of staff development, budgeting and fiscal management, program development, financial development, facility management, risk management, membership recruitment and retention, board and volunteer development, and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and purpose of the YMCA.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple physical and program sites.
  • Proven track record of developing authentic relationships within the YMCA movement and with the community, vendors, and organizations.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Proven communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Professional image and the ability to work harmoniously with staff, members and the business community.
  • YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred.
