Director, Production Management (Direct Mail)

This position is a senior level client facing lead responsible for directing the work of a highly skilled direct mail production team.  This role requires strong people management, client relationship, print production, and financial forecasting and vendor management expertise. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Management:

  • Provides oversight and direction to the direct mail team.  Directs activities of staff members.
  • Tracks competencies and provides leadership and development as required to achieve objectives. Set goals and conducts performance evaluations; recommend s salary and promotional increases. Interviews and selects job applicants
  • Financial budgeting and reporting expertise. Reviews and approves printing invoices and postal statements insuring prices are in line with contractual agreements. 
  • Understands the changes in marketplace conditions, including postal requirements and implications, and ensure those impacts are properly considered and reflected in business decision processes and planning
  • In collaboration with procurement establish competitive contractual partners with key vendors negotiating effective pricing structures. Manages vendor relationships to ensure product quality, and timeliness.     
  • Continually identifies areas for cost improvement through ongoing evaluation of vendors and print production models in the marketplace
  • Strong client facing skills to analyze work flow, evaluate systems and formulate plans.

Production:

  • Drives the planning and successful execution of complex production jobs of high quality, cost-effective, on time and within budget
  • Leads the production team in effectively managing print, letter shop and logistic operations of all large volume direct mail campaigns
  • Leads the development of new packaging, fulfillment and postal solutions along with costing analysis for new tests

Client:

  • Supports clients by driving a performance culture through coaching, facilitating, & ensuring delivery of services requested.
  • Recommends strategies and communicates the desires, goals and challenges of clients to other members of a project team including suppliers

Innovation:

  • Identifies new production technologies and processes to enable more effective communications; ensure continuous improvement and optimal production solutions for new and existing marketing materials and concepts
  • Identifies and recommends options and alternative resources to most effectively use manufacturing capabilities.

Complexity:

  • This position is responsible for overseeing annual mail volume of 800 million pieces of direct mail campaigns, working with a stable of vendors across the country. 
  • Ability to lead, work in and contribute to a high-performing team
  • Serves as a key leader of the CoE Management team.
  • Customer-focused attitude and strong desire to provide sound, helpful advice
  • Can effectively collaborate with departmental peers, marketing, financial directors and L-teams as required.  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and direct interaction with clients
  • Ability to oversee and manage own workload effectively without direct supervision
  • This position must exhibit extensive industry knowledge and understanding of the latest trends and technologies to identify strategies for continuously improving the effectiveness and efficiency of use of print and mail. 
Educational Background: 
A Bachelor's degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • Demonstrated leadership in Direct Mail Management. 10+  years of experience in direct mail management, with at least five years of management experience
  • Excellent people management skills with demonstrated team-building, leading and motivating teams
  • Strong budget and financial acumen
  • Knowledge of the print production process, trends and industry best practices with keen understanding of postal regulations, USPS and other delivery alternatives
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across groups and departments, connecting with and exhibiting a solid understanding of partnerships.
  • Excellent oral/written presentation skills. Proficient in MS Office applications
