NPR in Washington DC is seeking an experienced, talented, and knowledgeable Data Editor to work on the Visuals team in the NPR newsroom. You’ll report original stories, contribute data analysis and reporting for other newsroom projects, and collaborate on data visualizations for our digital platforms. You’ll also provide leadership to a growing Visuals team, collaborate on projects, and bring experience with new approaches and methodologies. The Data Editor will build strong relationships and problem-solving collaborations across the newsroom, member stations, our partners, and the public media community.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Function as a thought leader and problem solver for the Visuals team, newsroom, and member stations
  • File, on average, one to two data-based stories a month either initiated by you or in collaboration with the newsroom
  • Produce visuals for those stories as well, depending on the complexity and working with our team
  • Lead and own data collection processes and standards to ensure data consistency
  • Maintain databases or loading pipelines for frequently used datasets
  • Familiar with wide variety of data sources and their respective strengths and pitfalls
  • Explain best practices and tools for data reporting and storytelling to collaborators
  • Provide and collaborate on best practices and multi-format investigative stories with the data visualization team, photo team, and the video team
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university or equivalent; journalism and/or computer science degree preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • Leadership skills and a pragmatic approach to journalism and investigative storytelling
  • Flexibility and aplomb required to respond quickly to data-focused journalism of active stories in the news along with the persistence required to find the story
  • Collaborate and educate colleagues who have varying levels of understanding of data reporting, approaches, and methodologies
  • Experience with data analysis and reporting methods, such as working with pivot tables, loading structured data into a database, exploratory charting and generating summary statistics. You might use software like Excel, Google Spreadsheets, PostgreSQL, Pandas and Jupyter Notebook
  • Familiarity with Pythonic web frameworks, such as Flask or Django
  • Working knowledge of front-end JavaScript visualization libraries, such as D3.js, Leaflet, or Mapbox
  • Familiarity with quantitative journalism best-practices
  • Experience in using, applying, and the culture of Agile and Lean methodologies
