Teach For America - South Carolina is in the midst of an unprecedented organizational transformation period to catapult its level of impact and measurable outcomes to record setting heights. The first step in this process is to identify and secure entrepreneurial and strategically oriented talent to lead the organization forward. To compliment Teach For America’s Micro-level programming, a Macro-level department is being created to address Education and Policy Reform, Systems Change and Thought Leadership. The Managing Director, Education Advocacy and Systems Transformation, will play a critical role in catalyzing Teach For America - South Carolina (TFA) alumni community towards collective action with students, families, and broader community. Through an anti-oppressive lens and culturally responsive leadership, s/he will be charged with working with TFA’s leadership team to develop a clear, cohesive strategy for the participant journey of its leaders. Teach For America will rely on the Managing Director, Education Advocacy and Systems Transformationto deepen the understanding of alumni engagement through a comprehensive alumni impact analysis in South Carolina. This analysis will be the foundation, which will create a clear vision and strategy for the Community Reform department.

With an explicit focus on culturally responsive leadership, diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, and an anti-oppression consciousness lens, the Managing Director, Education Advocacy and Systems Transformation will develop the understanding of these foci and other research-based frameworks that address systemic inequity particularly with low-income communities and communities of color. Sustainable systems and structures will need to be created for accountability and communication for the alumni sub-team. S/he will maintain current partnerships with other influential organizations across the educational ecosystem and initiate new opportunities for partnership and impact in the work of educational equity. As a team leader, The Managing Director, Education Advocacy and Systems Transformation will exemplify Teach For America’s cultural values while influencing and leading in our region.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Policy Reform Programming (33%)

  • Work with TFA South Carolina’s leadership team to create goals and objectives to influence policy in the South Carolina region. Goals and objectives should include programmatic, marketing and fundraising strategies to ensure maximum impact of work.
  • Create network of high level administrators and policy makers in local governments, school boards and political groups to facilitate policy conversations and systems improvements.
  • Manage and publish a comprehensive calendar of local meetings, events, and forums to communicate opportunities for alumni and TFA leaders to represent the organization’s interests.
  • Create a goals and initiatives progress dashboard to present to TFA South Carolina’s leadership team and board of directors.

Thought Leadership Programming (33%)

  • Organize a series of “Think Tank” meetings with alumni and other community influencers (leaders in Public, Nonprofit, Education and Corporate sectors) to discuss issues and address systemic challenges in low income areas and communities of color.
  • Work with TFA South Carolina’s Leadership team to create a schedule of white papers and data collected from Think Tanks and other credible data collection agencies (Department of Education, National Center of Educational Statistics, etc.).
  • Present findings to necessary parties, including but not limited to: TFA South Carolina Leadership Team, Regional meetings, local and national conferences, and current / potential funders.

Alumni Engagement (33%)

  • Increase the Net Promoter Score (NPS) by 10% (of FY17 EOY metric) and the Corps and Alumni Learning Index (CALI) to 80% aligned with TFA’s Breakthrough Goals and grow meaningful relational touchpoints to 75% alumni involvement.
  • Create a baseline metric to measure collective impact and development in equity leadership in partnership with the TFA South Carolina Leadership Team.
  • Develop a clear strategy for catalyzing, mobilizing, and reintroducing Teach for America South Carolina as a partner for mid-senior level alumni leaders by re-branding and reorienting TFA-SC alumni to the vision for support and development of alumni.
  • Participate in and support Teach for America South Carolina's team-wide responsibilities and events.
Educational Background: 
Master’s Degree preferred, Bachelor’s Degree required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Demonstrated experience in leading adults and teams, coaching and developing others, and diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Experience creating and managing systems
  • Demonstrated results in vision-setting, strategy creation, and leading culture
  • Strong/Exemplary experience creating and managing systems
  • Strong evidence of building relationships (BRIO) and culturally competent leadership
  • Strong understanding of the South Carolina educational ecosystem preferred
  • 5-7 years of experience with 3+ years of management experience of a team preferred

Work Demands

  • Willingness to work some weekends and evenings to facilitate or observe alumni professional development
  • Ability to travel by car to in-person meetings in various South Carolina cities regularly
  • Must be willing to work from a Teach For America - South Carolina Office in North Charleston, SC
