Managing Director, Staff Diversity, Equity & Inclusiveness (DEI) Strategy

In partnership with the Senior Managing Director, DEI Strategy you play a pivotal role for defining staff diversity, equity and inclusiveness expectations by creating a comprehensive strategy to launch, facilitate learning engagements and implement on DEI initiatives across the enterprise. As a result, you will be a critical thought partner on developing learning experiences that support our staff to internalize our expectations in relation with our Foundations.

You will serve as a key linkage between critical initiatives that underway within the Staff DEI Strategy team, as well as represent the team in various cross-functional, organization-wide initiatives. You believe in high accountability comes with high level of supports especially in our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusiveness.

You will collaborate across the sub-teams of Human Assets and across the organization to share and gain perspective that will inform staff DEI strategies.  The ideal candidate will bring experience and lessons learned about diversity, culture, strategy, and have documented success working in a fast-paced environment and the ability move work forward quickly. You have experience collaborating with and influencing leaders through proven human resources experience. You will work closely with the Senior Managing Director to discover cross-team needs, develop clear scopes of work and project plans, and lead cross-functional teams in executing priorities based on needs from org-wide DEI councils.

Areas of Responsibility: 

(60%) Manage strategy execution for DEI initiatives (with a focus on Multicultural Competencies FY19 & FY20):

  • Implement DEI strategies aligned, including partner in the development of resources and supports, to our DEI commitment, talent strategy and organizational culture strategy
  • Identifying cross-cutting issues, creating solution proposals and well-defined scopes of work, and leading cross-functional project teams to execute against them
  • Identify key stakeholders and approach to collaboration; define work plan, design and implement roll-out of multicultural competencies
  • Supports implementation of new/revised practices, policies or procedures (including developing supports, tools, micro learning, etc)
  • Monitor progress and adjust course over time based on data-driven findings on an ongoing basis

(20%) Advise and consult with teams to align on key org-wide DEI initiatives to ensure alignment and direction in accordance with our DEI plan

  • Creates and works to enhance staff DEI accountability through collaboration and enhancing people practices (i.e. onboarding, performance management)
  • Gain a deep understanding of our staff expectations for diversity, equity and inclusiveness as outlined in our employment policies, freedoms and mutual responsibilities, performance management system, team goals and core values.
  • Actively contribute to the Staff DEI Strategy Team’s and the Human Assets Team’s priorities, helping to adapt priorities, increase our effectiveness and efficiency, maintain and build trust and effectively implement our systems and process.

(10%) Support team operations and culture

  • In partnership with SMD, integrating strategic planning and budgeting activities with a coherent approach to performance measurement across multiple teams

 (10%) Participate in activities or engagements to further understand our Foundations, which may include resource group participation (optional) and fulfill all selection commitment of future corps members

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent related work experience. Master’s degree strongly preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • Displays and demonstrates passion and professional and personal commitment with nuanced understanding of our  principles of equity, diversity, and inclusiveness
  • Demonstrated commitment to Teach For America’s vision, mission and core values

Prior Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years of work experience
  • 5 years of experience facilitating in-person and/or virtual engagements
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in a human resources discipline
  • Demonstrated experience leading identity development initiatives
  • Prior lateral management experience
  • Experience in project management required

Work Demands

  • Travel 1-2 times/quarter

  • Exceptional operating, planning and execution skills with the ability to develop systems to track progress on projects and project manage against plan, utilizing systems to track workflow and marshalling resources strategically to achieve outcomes
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) skills and adeptness at the Microsoft Suite to organize and communicate findings in a clear and compelling way
  • Ability to listen, influence and execute through others, build investment and set direction across a broad and diverse group of stakeholders
  • Strong reasoning and strategic thinking skills; ability to analyze data to draw accurate conclusions that inform strategy
  • Self-motivated with ability to transition smoothly from independent work to collaborative work to produce high-quality outcomes
  • Ability to model and facilitating engagements on multicultural competence
  • Exceptional reliability and integrity and ability to responsibly handle confidential information with discretion
