We are growing our team at Big Brothers Big Sisters! Under the supervision of the Director of Site-Based Programs, this position is responsible for implementation, support, and oversight of BBBS school-based mentoring programs.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Work directly with and build strong partnerships with selected schools and after-school sites to promote safe and positive one-to-one mentoring relationships.
- Solicit referrals of eligible children to be matched with volunteer mentors.
- Recruit volunteers from local colleges, corporate partnerships, and the larger community.
- Assess volunteers and children for appropriate program participation by conducting initial and update interviews, orientations, and training. Obtain collateral material needed for assessment purposes, including criminal background checks and references.
- Complete timely and comprehensive written assessments and recommendations for participation in the program based upon assessments of each individual.
- Maintain up-to-date and accurate paperwork, documentation, and database records for all participants according to Big Brothers Big Sisters standards.
- Make matching decisions that have the potential to result in strong mentor/mentee relationships.
- Facilitate initial match introductions and provide professional support of the match through coaching, resources, and checking-in with all match parties regarding relationship development, child safety, and needs.
- Work closely with school and site staff to ensure mentoring pairs are provided the space, resources, and support needed while on site.
- Create and implement activities for mentoring relationships to use that will enhance positive relationship development, socio-emotional skills, and academic skills.
- Gather data from the school and the match participants as to measure outcomes and program needs.
- Promote positive work environment through a proactive, solution-oriented perspective.
- Make a commitment to provide superior customer service to all program participants.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- In short, this position is responsible for the relationship/partnership development, volunteer and child recruitment, program implementation, maintenance of program records, and data collection for programs at specific assigned schools.
- The Program Specialist will work full-time (i.e. 40 hours per week), balancing time between the BBBSMT office in Davidson county and assigned partner schools and sites. Evening and weekend work is required regularly to best meet the needs of the community.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree in social work or related field required.
Skills/Experience:
- Experience in project and/or volunteer management in a field related to social work, social services, or community relations preferred.
- Prior experience working with high-school or college students, adult volunteers, and/or elementary-age youth is preferred.
- Must have willingness to and experience with facilitating trainings and presenting to groups of people.
- Ability to work from main office but travel consistently to and from assigned sites/school.
- Passion for mission and desire to learn and grow professionally required.
