The Director of Government Relations plays a key role in the development and implementation of policy and other strategies to achieve the Conservancy’s goals through interaction with governments, multilateral agencies, and/or the corporate sector. S/he will be a member of the Federal Campaigns Team, and will provide information, analysis and assistance in support of the organization’s policy campaigns and initiatives. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Director of Government Relations works with an interdisciplinary team to serve as a subject matter expert and advisor on complex and strategic issues. S/he liaises with TNC’s global strategy teams, USGR and other External Affairs Departments, Science and Field Conservation staff, and with TNC’s State Operating Units to further the conservation goals and strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • May supervise administrative and professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training and development.
  • Applies a diversified knowledge of practices to support Conservancy strategies.
  • Works collaboratively within a cross-functional interdisciplinary team.
  • Coordinate with state Operating Units on a range of regional or federal Conservancy policy priorities.
  • Develops relationships and works effectively with corporate, government, community, and non-governmental organization partners.
  • Acts independently within broad program goals.
  • Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of multi-year fundraising strategies, and goals.
  • Coordinate with Conservancy team and broader partners to develop and advocate for legislative proposals.
  • Management of outreach materials, logistics, and other advocacy events as needed for federal and other priorities
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in political science, environmental policy, management or other relevant field and 5 years of government relations or corporate sector experience, or equivalent combination education/experience.
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fluency in English and (list language(s) of the countries of the relevant geography).
  • Analytical and project management experience. Demonstrated experience in successfully developing and implementing complex projects in an unstructured environment.
  • Supervisory experience (if required).
  • Experience developing, directing and managing multiple projects and implementing strategic program goals.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated.
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred.
  • Master’s degree appreciated (or required).
  • Experience presenting to and communicating with management-level individuals within the corporate sector.  Excellent presentation skills. (If required.)
  • Excellent team player with experience working in multi-disciplinary groups, using influence and interpersonal skills, listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships with governments, corporations, partners, donors, volunteers, and all levels of staff.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication, negotiating and organizational skills.
  • Experience in arenas linked to conservation priorities, as an example, agricultural issues relevant to the development, passage and implementation of the Farm Bill’s conservation titles. 
Additional Information: 

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."
