The primary focus is to direct the accounting and financial services for the Y. Responsible for the overall financial functions of the Y while managing all accounting functions in accordance with GAAP rules. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Positively models and reinforces YMCA’s core values, mission statement, and relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries and financial reports while managing cash flow.  Analyze monthly financial statements and reports to Finance Committee.  Oversee preparation and monitoring of operating capital budgets, Endowment Funds, and Maintenance Reserve Funds.  Supervise payroll and related financial records and reporting.  Prepare/supervise weekly payables processing. 
  • Monitors monthly financial operations, prepares analysis and reports, and gives guidance to executive and operating staff. Works closely with operations staff on issues that affect financial outcome. Secures and allocates program or project resources so that strategic objectives can be achieved. Prepares specific recommendations.
  • Supervise and direct personnel and volunteers within finance department.  Supervise management information staff and develop related policies.  Review and evaluate overall staff performance while motivating them to achieve goals.  Manages the staff and oversees the operations of the accounting/finance, information systems and other assigned departments.
  • Reconcile monthly bank statements, subsidiary ledgers, and financial records.  Prepare required monthly, quarterly, annual reports and filings related to finance and administrative information.  Record daily receipts and post batches.  Organize and prepare for annual external audit and the preparation of tax returns including IRS Form 990.
  • Reviews, updates, and/or develops internal control systems for the YMCA and oversees internal audits which check for compliance on a variety of policies and standards. Provides recommendations for improvement. Oversees preparation of reports to YMCA of the USA and governmental agencies.
  • Assist with human resource policies and procedures.  Handle insurance issues including Liability and Workers Comp. Overseeing the benefit plans, communication, enrollment and administration.      
  • Oversees the development of the annual operating budget, including all branch budgets. Guides the organization to make tough choices about what to stop, start, and continue. Works closely with operations staff to ensure that branch budgets are well-planned, realistic, and prepared in a timely manner.
  • Maintains accurate records and accounting functions in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.  Assures compliance with state and local regulations as they relate to Finance, while adhering to deadlines.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Educational Background: 
Requires a college degree in accounting, business, management, or equivalent.  A Certified Public Accounting certificate is preferred.  
Skills/Experience: 
  • Requires at least three years of related experience.  Must be able to apply practical knowledge in GAAP, nonprofit accounting and reporting, policy development, financial statement analysis, cash management, and payroll regulations.  Requires proficiency in operating accounting software, word processor and spreadsheet programs, making presentations to groups while explaining complex policies, practices, and budgeting. 
  • Requires the ability to plan, prioritize, and organize work effectively under pressure and time deadlines.  Requires the ability to analyze problems, propose reasonable solutions, make logical decisions, and carry-out decisions as they are made while following up with feedback where appropriate.    
  • Must maintain and comply with related governmental record keeping and administration.  It is essential that some accounting decisions be made regarding financial policies, systems, payroll records and other accounting/finance programs.  Must maintain the integrity of confidential employment and business information.
