The Marine Technician will assist South Carolina marine staff with a diverse range of assignments. The tech will work closely with TNC’s Marine Conservation Director and Marine Manager to support our efforts with coastal resilience and resource management planning.  Duties will include assisting with stakeholder meetings, data collection, field work, writing reports and outreach materials.The Marine Technician will assist South Carolina marine staff with a diverse range of assignments. The tech will work closely with TNC’s Marine Conservation Director and Marine Manager to support our efforts with coastal resilience and resource management planning.  Duties will include assisting with stakeholder meetings, data collection, field work, writing reports and outreach materials.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The majority of the Marine Technician’s time will be spent supporting our North Coast Resilience Project, Living Shoreline work, Community Rating System app development and partnership for a shellfish management report. S/he will assist staff in stakeholder meeting preparation and implementation for the North Coast Resilience Project. S/he will assist with monitoring the TNC living shoreline projects and routine boat maintenance. Duties will also include assisting with the CRS app development and posting on TNC’s public website, coastalresilience.org. Other tasks can include creating map based projects and outreach related to existing mapped data. GIS experience is optional but will be useful in understanding and developing outreach materials.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Partner coordination and stakeholder meeting planning.
  • Ability to help develop educational outreach materials about coastal resilience efforts.
  • Collect field data and boat maintenance.
  • Make day to day decisions based on standard guidelines provided by supervisor.
  • May perform administrative work related to project.   
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Educational Background: 
Associate’s Degree in natural resources, environmental studies or equivalent combination of education and 6 month’s experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources.
  • Concise report writing especially in the form of public education materials.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prefer Bachelor’s Degree in natural resources, environmental studies or equivalent combination of education or 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Prefer Graduate degree seeking student during the 2018 calendar year.
  • GIS experience.   
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Field experience.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment. 
  • Prefer candidates currently enrolled in a South Carolina Colleger or University. 
  • Time management skills.
