The Sycan Marsh Preserve Steward performs and participates in preserve operations including the maintenance, management, development and coordination of preserve stewardship activities on the remote 30,000+ acre Sycan Marsh Preserve and provides support to other TNC preserves within the region. This position requires living in personal quarters at the Jim Castle’s Applied Research Station at Sycan Marsh for the winter months of November through March. Housing is required on this property for the following reasons: the property is particularly vulnerable to damage from winter weather conditions if unattended during the winter season.
The Sycan Marsh Preserve Steward leads work teams to ensure the objectives of Conservation Strategic Plans are met and coordinates community support. The steward performs all aspects of land management, public access, outreach, infrastructure, equipment, data collection, mapping, reporting and administration. Works closely with Oregon chapter teams and appropriate stakeholders to develop or advance preserve-related strategies and regional conservation efforts.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
- Leads or monitors work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers covering a wide geographic area.
- Financial responsibility includes working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, and assisting with budget development.
- Coordinates multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes.
- Fulfills legal and reporting obligations for TNC-owned fee lands and conservation easements.
- Prepares preserves for prescribed fire activities, assists with TNC and partner fire management and maintains Wildland Firefighter certification.
- Networks with diverse groups, including land owners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy.
- Works under minimal and distant supervision; must make independent decisions based on experience and judgments.
- Works in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.; ATV, snowmobile, chainsaw, Bobcat, two-way radio, etc.).

- Must achieve physical fitness standard as determined by local Fire Program Manager.
- Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g. First Aid, CPR, Commercial Pesticide Applicator).
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Cross cultural and multilingual skills appreciated.
- 2 years related experience in land management including prescribed fire, invasive species control, forestry and livestock grazing.
- Ability to recognize plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities.
- Spatial data skills including mapping with ArcMap GIS and the use of GPS equipment.
- Experience supervising staff or volunteers.

- Holds a license or certification in use of chainsaws and ATVs.
- Experience with data collection.
- Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
- Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
Preferred hiring range: $21.58-$22.93 per hour.
