Teach For America – Indianapolis seeks a Manager, Leadership Development Coach (MLDC) to play a critical role in the overall success of the TFA mission and vision.  The MLDC is charged with developing a cohort of culturally competent and committed leaders who are clear on the impact they want to make on educational outcomes for children in Indianapolis now and in the future.

To achieve their charge, the MLDC will engage in one on one coaching with each member of their cohort, using the Transformational Coaching framework as a guide.  The MLDC will also design, in collaboration with others, small group learning and development experiences aligned to the Teach For America Theory of Leadership.  This Theory of Leadership calls on us to develop leaders that are committed to and empowered by the larger collective—therefore, MLDCs are charged with mobilizing cohorts of 2CMs to grow and learn from one another.  Finally, the MLDC plays an important role in guiding corps members as they transition into alumnihood to develop their personal theories of change and identify pathways to continued leadership.

The Manager, Leadership Development Coach will report directly to the Managing Director, Corps Member Development.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Coach and Ignite Corps Member Leadership (65%)

  • Quickly build rapport and credibility with and lead a cohort of second year corps members
  • Coach corps members to grow as teacher leaders in the short term while also developing their leadership for long term systems change leadership
  • Support in the design/planning and own the facilitation/execution of monthly small group leadership development experiences
  • Provide monthly (more, as needed) one-on-one coaching experiences, including observations and debriefs, ensuring strong classroom outcomes with each cohort member
  • Develop and maintain a culture in your cohort where all CMs feel valued, supported, and welcomed given their unique identities; develop a cohort community where members feel driven to collective impact and inspired to learn with and from each other now and in the future

Steward External Relationships (5%)

  • Build and strengthen relationships with school partners; collaborate with key partners on corps member coaching, support, and retention

Team Collaboration and Coordination (20%)

  • Prepare for and lead check ins with your manager around progress toward your goals and your ongoing development
  • Prepare for and participate in ongoing functional team meetings and stepbacks
  • Collaborate with and support your functional team colleagues work and development
  • Give input on and feedback to the design and execution of corps member learning experiences
  • Alongside fellow Program Continuum colleagues, design and execute the Corps Member Arc of Development

Fulfill our Mission through Organizational and Regional Priorities (10%)

  • Participate in corps member selection, corps member confirmation, and the alumni survey campaign; support and attend events that further other initiatives that impact our members and partners
  • Attend regional meetings and retreats held throughout the year, biweekly staff meetings, and occasional conferences and trainings, engage in ongoing learning and development as systems change leaders committed to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness, and uphold organizational fiscal and operational policies
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3+ years professional work experience required
  • Experience as a teacher required
  • Experience working directly with low income communities required
  • Experience coaching teachers and/or leading teacher development required
  • Experience with the Transformational Coaching framework preferred, but not required
  • Experience coaching teachers to implement Culturally Responsive Pedagogy practices preferred, but not required
  • Experience designing and facilitating leadership development content preferred, but not required
  • Experience using coaching to create strong group culture and collective outcomes preferred, but not required

  • Develops and cultivates relationships with corps members and school partners in order to achieve results
  • Able to articulate, verbally and in writing, rationale for goals to motivate/inspire others
  • Draws on understanding of others to achieve desired outcomes and inspires action through shaping beliefs and behaviors
  • Navigates conflict and resolves differences in challenging situations

Reasoning and Strategic Thinking

  • Able to gather and analyze data in order to monitor outcomes and to inform or adjust strategy
  • Applies reasoning skills to assess situation, select appropriate data, and analyze outcomes
  • Able to prioritize with which problems/opportunities to act upon in a strategy way in order to achieve meaningful outcomes

Operating and Managing

  • Able to effectively track tasks, assess progress, and follow through on the execution of plans with minimal oversight

Work Demands

  • Some evening and weekend work required
  • Ability to travel locally to various schools sites during work hours
  • Minimal out of state travel required (approx. 2 – 5 times per year)
