As the Senior Managing Director of Channel Strategy you will be responsible for aligning the delivery of activities across all digital channels for Teach For America including web platforms, social networks, and email. This new role has been created to bring a level of strategic thinking and intelligence to Teach for America’s most critical marketing and communication efforts. In this role you will be instrumental in helping Teach For America achieve its powerful mission to transform society through educational reform. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be at the heart of a strategic shift in how a large, complex not-for-profit communicates in digital channels, and you will be empowered to make decisions and build capabilities that draw on your professional expertise. You will be a strong manager who can effectively delegate and is able to get into the weeds when necessary, especially as this new function is established.

The Senior Managing Director of Channel Strategy will report to the Vice President of Digital Content and Channels and serve as one of three senior deputies in the leadership team of Teach For America’s digital marketing organization.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Work closely with your Managing Director of Web, ensuring that web development is consistent with modern engineering practices and based on a solid foundation of web standards and processes
  • Drive the improvement of Teach For America’s content management system (Drupal) and related tools, integrations, and plugins
  • Collaborate with members of the IT team to ensure a fluid integration between TFA systems including Java-based applications and SSO
  • Collaborate with members of the IT team on timelines, priorities, and investments
  • Approve the selection of any new technologies including software solutions, programming languages, development, deployment, and quality assurance tools
  • Own the development roadmap for web properties in collaboration with colleagues
  • Ensure that Teach For America stakeholders at all levels understand the web strategy and the impact of decisions related to web properties across the trio of time, quality, and cost

Social Media

  • Work closely with your Managing Director of Social Media, ensuring that Teach for America is focusing resources on the most impactful social channels with a strategy that is in line with organizational goals
  • Set priorities for social media that ladder up to organizational goals and serve user needs in consultation with the Senior Managing Director of Content Strategy and the Senior Managing Director of Insights
  • Build capacity for experimentation with existing and new social channels as part of an ongoing effort to improve the value social networks provide to users and to Teach For America
  • Ensure that your team is measuring and evaluating social content on an ongoing basis and using research and data to ensure effectiveness

Email

  • Empower your Managing Director of Email to establish a strategy that leverages the central role email plays in exciting users to engage with Teach For America 
  • Shepherd the process of centralizing all Teach For America email communications into a single system that provides a cohesive view of all audience segments
  • Ensure all email activity is measured in collaboration with the insights team
  • Oversee a process of transitioning to a series of common email templates that are tied to stages within the customer journey for all audiences
  • Help drive the improvement of Teach For America’s CRM (Pardot) and related tools for ensuring traceability of email communications

Strategy, Leadership, and Collaboration

  • Advocate for and operate under an agile/Lean UX environment with confidence
  • Meet specific annual quantitative goals for recruitment growth and corps members and alumni satisfaction
  • Refine and evolve an existing channel strategy to fit the needs of Teach For America based on your expertise
  • Represent digital channel strategy at the most senior levels of the organization across all teams
  • Supervise and manage a team of developers, business analysts, quality assurance managers, social media managers, email specialists, and multi-talented web, social media, and email specialists
  • Be an influential voice for best practices in user experience, design, and technology and be passionate about the role evolving technology can play in providing value to users
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required
Advanced degree preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • 10 years of experience in digital marketing at an agency, not-for-profit, or in a complex corporate context with a large national or multi-national organization; experience at an organization with a regional or distributed model preferred
  • Expertise in technology, including the ability to have conversations about technical architecture, programming languages, and the implications of different web development frameworks
  • Experience with Drupal (7+), Pardot, Radian6, Facebook for Business, and Google Analytics
  • A track record of developing successful channel strategies for organizations across multiple channels, at scale, over the course of multiple content cycles
  • Experience in a web re-platform or large website build
  • Exceptional presentation skills
  • Experience working with software engineers, data analysts, content strategists, designers, and project managers
  • Proven experience leading teams and are skilled at attracting and retaining staff, creating clarity in ambiguity, and developing, motivating, and unifying individuals
  • Passionate about educational equity as well as a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness
  • Able to think big, generate ideas and drive solutions to complex problems in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • An exceptional writer and oral communicator, including all aspects of content creation and editorial development
  • Skilled in the art of persuasion, with a deep sense of humility and openness to the perspectives of others
  • Able to maintain a sense of possibility in the face of obstacles, and balance both short- and long-term results
  • National travel for in-person meetings will vary throughout the year, but is estimated to include an average of 1-2 trips per month; some weekend and evening work expected.
