The Director, Principal Gifts is the business partner of 2-3 National Corporate Team Members responsible for set principal gift prospects and donors, meaning donors with the potential to engage with the organization at $1M or greater. He/she is the fundraising business partner to Regional Vice Presidents and Executive Directors, as well as to all other development portfolio holders and fundraisers. He/she is the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on fundraising strategy and execution for principal gifts donors with the potential to engage with the organization at $1M. Working in partnership with National Directors of Philanthropy, Chapter leadership and dedicated Donor Development staff throughout LLS, the Principal Gifts Officer will identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts of $1M and above from corporations to support LLS mission programs.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, steward, and maintain active contact with principal gifts prospects and donors with the potential to engage with the organization at the $1 million or greater level.
  • Business partner to Principal Gifts Officers in developing and maintaining portfolios of up to 50 principal gifts prospects and donors delivering at least $30 million.
  • Develop and write highly strategic and personalized proposals, stewardship pieces, and other assets that leverage all available national Chapter assets in order to advance principal gifts donor relationships and solicitations.
  • Collaborate closely with Senior Director, Major Donor Funding Opportunities to align principal gifts strategies, solicitations, and materials with organizational and Donor Development priorities.
  • Contribute to an ongoing process of identifying/evaluating, and tracking a comprehensive pool of principal gifts prospects.
  • Contribute to prospecting, qualification, solicitation and cultivation a plans.
  • Surface executive leadership and research partner engagement opportunities. Ensures opportunities are optimized through timely, quality preparation, and follow up.
  • Strategize, plan, and evaluate the principal gifts program; develop and report on qualitative and quantitative performance metrics.
  • Create strong ties to all other portfolio holders in LLS, including home office staff, field Executive Directors, and development professionals, as well as members of national and local Boards and the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Provide leadership to the field on the strategy for donors with $1 million potential.
  • Bring Leukemia & Lymphoma Society resources to highest and best use for multi-year solicitation, cultivation and stewardship plans across all LLS products.
  • Perform strategic and other initiatives to benefit the Donor Development Department and the organization, as requested.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 5-7 years of corporate fundraising experience, including experience personally soliciting $100,000+ gifts; principal gifts experience preferred.
  • Proven work experience as a strategic account manager or key account manager. Project management experience a plus.
  • Direct experience developing solicitation strategies and/or proposals for $100,000+ gifts.
  • Progressive experience in successful development programs and knowledge of “best practices” in development.
  • Capacity to acquire an understanding of leukemia, lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma, as well as issues of concern to blood cancer patients and their families.
  • Experience working in a matrix environment preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures with establishing new strategic relationships;
  • Ability to innovate and deftly apply negotiation skills;
  • Demonstrated experience developing new relationships with private sector funders and socially responsible actors across multiple sectors;
  • Strong business acumen and ability to understand the needs and interests of corporations as they relate to LLS;
  • Ability to establish and manage trusted relationships with internal and external senior business leaders;

  • Advanced fluency in MS Office Suite and InDesign preferred.
