Reporting to the Director of Content Production, the Copy Manager oversees copy editing and text styling for all AARP Media content, ensuring accuracy, clarity and stylistic consistency across all platforms, and maintaining quality control to the highest journalistic standards. Works with editors, the art department and editorial production staff to establish smooth copy processes to meet all deadlines. Works closely with Director of Content Production to ensure that editorial and production needs are planned for and achieved.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provides innovative leadership and coordinates copy editing functions for all AARP editorial platforms, including: AARP The Magazine; AARP Bulletin; AARP.org; tablet, including one-off digital magazines; all AARP videos, including closed captions and promotional material; e-publications such as The Girlfriend and Disrupt Aging; membership and marketing content; and special projects, such as books, bookazines and online destination page overhauls. Leads a team of copy editors to ensure that all content is copy edited to the highest editorial standards. 
  • Meets regularly with team to discuss style and usage issues, staff news, and how the team can best meet association goals and objectives.
  • Coordinates requests for copy editing from various editors and business units, and assigns projects to team members according to their particular strengths and interests. Follows up to ensure that the work is completed satisfactorily and is delivered in a timely fashion. When performance goals are not met, provides appropriate feedback to copy editors and works with them to improve their skills. Provides reports to the content production director as needed.
  • Top-copy edits (slots) all text in production, exercising sensitivity to editors’ objectives and writers’ voices. Demonstrates superb writing skills, in-depth grasp of grammar and usage, and analytical judgment to incorporate changes for clarity and style.
  • Tracks all copy desk files in K4 (InCopy), TruEdit and Word, from manuscript to print. Uses management skills, creative problem-solving and flexibility to handle large amounts of material under deadline pressure.
  • Maintains electronic AP Stylebook: Coordinates subscriptions and customizes entries to conform to AARP house style.
  • Advises content production director about individual staff performance and makes pay recommendations for staff and temporary copy editors. Hires, trains and supervises temporary staff.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, journalism or communications, and 6 or more years of professional experience at a major national newspaper or magazine.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Job requires management experience, including the ability to maintain efficiency under pressure and to successfully prioritize assignments and deadlines.
  • Must be proficient at conflict resolution without disruption to the workflow.
  • Must possess broad knowledge of editorial and copy editing skills and libel issues, as well as the ability to write with clarity and style.
  • Background in developing story ideas and working with writers is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of InCopy, Truedit, and Microsoft Office 365 using Macintosh is preferred.
