The primary responsibility of the Advocacy Manager is, in coordination with and under the direction of the State Policy Director to plan and manage federal, state and local grassroots advocacy efforts for the Commonwealth of Virginia in order to achieve the public policy goals of the Alzheimer's Association.  This position reports to the Director of Policy and is based at the Chapter Office in Richmond, VA.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Collaborate with four Chapter Executives, Alzheimer's Association Ambassadors, advocates, State Policy Director, and coalition partners in outreach to legislators, legislative staff, and representatives of government at the federal, state, and local levels to promote an understanding of and support for policies, programs, and services to meet the needs of individuals with Alzheimer's disease, their families, and their caregivers.
  • Build and support a Chapter-wide, grassroots network of trained volunteer advocates (including AIM (Alzheimer's Impact Movement) Advocacy Walk Committees) to carry out the Association's advocacy goals on a state and federal level.
  • Recruit and support a team of grasstop volunteer Ambassadors, each to serve as the lead Alzheimer's advocate to a member of the U.S. Congressional delegation.
  • Recruit, educate and mobilize advocates around state policy priorities of the Association, including an annual Advocacy Day in the state capital, and direct year round grassroots activities aimed at targeted state and, where appropriate, municipal leaders.
  • Build and work with, where appropriate, coalitions, committees, task forces, etc. to advance issues critical to individuals with Alzheimer's disease, their families, and their caregivers.
  • Plan and implement participation in public policy special events, including the annual Advocacy Day in the state capital, and participation in the AIM Advocacy Forum and Day on the Hill in Washington DC.
  • Serve as staff liaison and help develop Chapter Public Policy Committees in executing appropriate strategies and tactics to achieve the Association's public policy goals.
  • Engage and train Chapter staff and volunteers in advocacy activities.
  • Activate the Chapter's advocacy email network to ensure timely and effective response to policy developments when action is required, such as attending hearings, initiating calls, emails, letters, and/or social media outreach to legislators and media.
  • Manage the Alzheimer's Advocacy database of public policy advocates, provide monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on advocacy recruitment as well as advocate and staff contacts with federal and state.
  • With chapter Communications staff, coordinate contacts with media, including press releases and letters to the editor around public policy issues.
  • Work with advocate volunteers to encourage engagement in the political process, consistent with the legal parameters surrounding 501(c)(3) organizations and the Association's practices and policies.
  • Collaborate with the Association's Public Policy office in Washington DC.

Additional responsibilities:

  • Participate in Virginia Chapters community outreach, fund development, and program and service delivery activities as appropriate. 
  • Other duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of at least 3 years of experience in advocacy, grass roots organizing or public policy preferably with non-profit organizations
  • Understanding of Alzheimer's, aging, health care and long term care issues is preferred
  • Knowledge of federal and state legislative, regulatory, and budget processes
  • Political campaign experience in Virginia state or federal races a plus
  • Ability to work effectively with advocate volunteers, staff, and external contacts to build and maintain successful teams, coalitions and committees
  • Excellent written communication skills, including drafting and editing position statements, testimony, press releases, and letters to the editor
  • Excellent oral communication skills, including consensus building, and giving public presentations
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and strategic thinking skills
  • High level of integrity, diplomacy, and initiative
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, organize, and analyze public policy opportunities
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities
  • Absolute commitment to confidentiality
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Ability to travel locally, regionally and nationally as needed to perform job duties
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; proficiency with  CRM databases a plus
  • Familiarity with Google Apps
  • Valid driver's license with proof of insurance and a reliable personal vehicle to meet travel requirements
