The Operations Director is a key position at Heal the Bay, and we are seeking a leader who is passionate about maintaining and growing a healthy organization. The Operations Director reports to the CEO and is responsible for the legal and operational viability of Heal the Bay. S/he oversees the internal operations of Heal the Bay and takes a comprehensive view of the entire organization. S/he understands our organizational structure, budgets, programs, and activities and ensures we have the appropriate infrastructure to support our work. S/he manages human resources, IT, insurance, facilities and leases at all HTB locations. S/he promotes a culture of accountability, quality and continuous improvement. The Director of Operations must be detail-oriented, organized, and have excellent communication skills and follow-through.
Functions Include:
- Direct and/or participate in fiscal management including budgeting, payroll and grant management.
- Manage human resources: hiring and onboarding; training staff and volunteers; planning staff retreat and education events; reviewing and terminating staff; administering employee benefits; developing and implementing organizational policies including diversity, worker safety, and others.
- Oversee facilities, leases, and IT systems at all HTB locations, and represent HTB to landlords and other vendors.
- Work with directors to ensure staff professional development and career planning.
- Work closely with the Director and Operations Manager of the Heal the Bay Aquarium to maintain facilities and infrastructure and provide a safe and high-quality environment for animals, staff and visitors to the Aquarium. Co-lead the expansion of the Aquarium.
- Direct and maintain organization-wide alignment of programs and education with advocacy.
- Ability to promote an organizational culture of equity and inclusion;
- Oversee vehicle use, maintenance, insurance, and related policies.
- Monitor applicable government regulations and ensure compliance.
- Participate in strategic planning, events, campaign plans, and Board management.
- Develop and implement evaluation tools and metrics for HTB programs and staff.
The Director of Operations will have a four-year college degree or equivalent experience, and a minimum of five years in upper management at an NGO. Background in administration is preferred. Knowledge of current issues in California environmental policy, experience in education and/or advocacy campaigns, and fluency in Spanish are desired.
This is a full-time, salaried position with health, dental, vision and vacation benefits. Participation in some weekend and evening events, as well as regional and statewide travel, are necessary.
Salary Range: $75,000 - $90,000 based on experience
