The Nature Conservancy seeks a Northwest Wyoming Program Director to direct all aspects of land and water conservation in northwest Wyoming. Current priority areas include the Greybull River Basin, Sheep Mountain, Clarks Fork, and Shoshone River. S/he will work with partners and staff to advance a strategic conservation agenda in northwest Wyoming and the state. The Northwest Wyoming Program Director will identify and implement conservation priorities and long-term conservation strategies in areas of responsibility. S/he will develop partnerships with public and private organizations to advance science-based conservation initiatives and engage local community support for conservation efforts. S/he will negotiate complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and landowners to conserve and protect lands, waters, and livelihoods. S/he will serve as the statewide lead on a priority issue area, such as forestry, sustainable agriculture, energy, migratory corridors, or water. The Northwest Wyoming Program Director will also work closely with philanthropy staff to maintain a successful fundraising program, assisting in donor cultivation and fundraising efforts.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Establishes the Conservancy as a major conservation partner in northwest Wyoming and within their statewide priority issue area.
- Develops key partnerships with public and private organizations to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices
- Negotiates complex agreements, sometimes in political environments.
- Responsible for ensuring that public and private funds are raised to meet program needs.
- Builds cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals.
- Coordinates local advisory board.
- Identifies innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address the natural system needs.
- Programmatic scope may require cross-boundary work and relationships.
- May establish and manage teams or projects to support and improve conservation efforts.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Frequently makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
- Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies
- Experience negotiating.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Advanced degree in natural sciences or related field and/or law degree.
- 5-7 years’ experience in conservation practice or natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans.
- Experience in motivating, leading, or influencing others to achieve outcomes.
- Experience in forest or agriculture policy is advantageous.
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and regions.
- Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
- Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated.
- Experience in fundraising.
- Politically savvy.
