The Winona Y is seeking a highly motivated team member to lead our Youth Sports Department. This position is responsible for the delivery of developmental and competitive youth sports programs such as basketball, soccer, flag football, tackle football, pickle ball, floor hockey, volleyball, baseball, and summer sports and outdoor camps. This position will also oversee the day-to-day operations of the family department including birthday parties, Friday Night Live and other events. This is a full-time exempt position with a full benefits package.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Perform excellent service to all members, staff, volunteers and guests.
  • Build relationships by using names and initiating conversations with all members, staff, volunteers and guests. 
  • Communicate with supervisor, staff, members, guests, and volunteers in a clear, concise and positive manner while using Listen First skills.
  • Understands, supports and is committed to the YMCA cause and our role in the community as a leader in Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.   
  • Develop and implement cause-driven programming that promotes Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. 
  • Actively participates in management team meetings and committees as assigned. 
  • Understands, follows and demonstrates the Y Competencies listed below.
  • Play an active role in the annual campaign, recruiting campaigners and serving where needed on planning committees.
  • Work closely with the Marketing Coordinator on marketing/promotions to ensure consistent messaging around the Y as a cause-driven charitable organization. 
  • Build a culture of philanthropy within your department by building Y ambassadors within your staff/volunteer team, building relationships, and creating a case for support (need/response/impact). 
  • Work to ensure a diverse and inclusive culture at the Y. 
  • Know and follow the established Human Resources and Business Services procedures of the association. 
  • Responsible for assuring high standards of program quality and safety in accordance with YMCA safety and risk management policies. 
  • Follow all policies and procedures as set forth in the employee handbook, director handbook, department handbook and the emergency response plan manual.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, develop and schedule all employees and volunteers within your department.
  • Motivate and engage your employees and volunteers to increase retention and understanding of our Cause through regular staff meetings. 
  • Lead, direct and/or teach activities/classes for which employees or volunteers cannot be secured.
  • Develop your department’s annual budget; monitor and make adjustments as needed. 
  • Complete and approve payroll for your department as outlined in the payroll guidelines. 
  • Conduct annual performance reviews on all employees within your department.
  • Collaborate with other directors, Y’s and community groups. 
  • Assure your own self-development through reading, research, and conference or training attendance.
  • Act as a positive role model while implementing YMCA character development and following the four core values of Caring, Honesty, Responsibility, and Respect. 
  • Assist in annual Y special events as needed. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by your supervisor or the CEO.
  • Administer comprehensive youth sports program including youth sports programs for preschoolers through high school age children and teens, (including basketball, soccer, flag football, tackle football, pickleball, floor hockey, volleyball, baseball, and summer sports camps) ensuring that character development is an integral part of the program.
  • Administer youth non-physical programming including birthday parties and youth nights.  
  • In collaboration with the Member Services Coordinator, oversee the adult pick-up sports programs including basketball, pickleball, and volleyball.
  • Set a tone of positive interaction with youth at the Y and create a staff team that embodies this philosophy.
  • In collaboration with the Member Services Coordinator, communicate with families of youth whose behavior has not been consistent with Y values and our code of conduct. When appropriate, meet with those youth and families to determine if/when youth can return to the Y and the steps they will need to take in order to return. 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education or related field 
Skills/Experience: 
  • Strong relationship building, communication and organizational skills
  • CPR & First Aid certification within 6 months of employment
  • A passion for youth sports and working with kid
  • Programming & supervisory experience a plus
