The Sustainable Landscape Education Specialist implements activities related to Sustainable Landscape capacity building in rural communities of the Yucatan Peninsula, México. This position is for a fixed term contract for a two years period.
The Sustainable Landscape Education Specialist (SLES) implements activities related to Sustainable Landscape awareness and education, particularly in helping communities implement best practices in the agriculture and forestry sector in the Yucatán Peninsula. He/she shares the importance of sustainability in different landscape and develops training materials to this end. The SLES works with local TNC allies of the 5 Networks for Landscape Innovation to identify key leaders, understand their needs and potential and coordinates with, local agencies to promote best practices and help develop concrete alternatives. He/she helps to develop, support and/or coordinate community conservation-related and forestry activities and provides field information to landscape planners for forestry, sustainable agriculture and community conservation work. He/she may support our local allies to raise funds by providing input for proposal writing and solicitation as needed. The SLES will support the Selva Maya team in the elaboration of yearly report and the continuous evaluation process, and will monitor the number of people trained. He/she will also support local leaders in the replication of trainings.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Assists in helping local communities to adopt best practices in forestry and agriculture, using innovative approach, in the area of influence of the five Network for landscape innovation in the Yucatán Peninsula.
- Works with identified communities and the 5 networks to identify key leaders, understand their needs and potential and coordinates with local allies to resolve challenges linked to the training process though innovative approach.
- Helps to develop, support and/or coordinate, sustainable agriculture, community conservation and forestry-related activities in the 5 regions of interest.
- He/she may support our local allies and networks to raise funds by providing input for proposal writing and solicitation as needed.
- Works in partnership with other organizations of the Yucatán Peninsula in a collaborative and advisory capacity.
- Contribute to the elaboration of annual reports and support the implementation of the evaluation system, and follow up of the Social Network Analysis.
- Monitor the main indicator of the project and inform the team.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 4 years’ experience in community development and/or conservation or rural development education, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Fluency in Spanish and English.
- Communications experience including presenting to community leaders, government officials, or related; and working in partnership with other organizations.
- Experience with MS Office, Word, Excel and GIS management.
- Experience working with partner’s/government agencies without violating any restrictions related to conflicts of interest, lobbying former employers, or influencing decision makers.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Mayan language is a plus.
- At least 4-6 years’ experience in community development and/or conservation or rural development education, or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of current trends in Landscape Management, climate Change and CBD
- Excellent communications in English and Spanish. Mayan language is a plus.
- Familiarity with the political and cultural environment of Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the functional needs and practices in Mexico.
- Demonstrated experience in MS Office, Word and Excel. May require database management skills with ability to produce reports.
- Ability to manipulate, analyze and interpret data and Social Network Analysis.
- Work with indigenous communities, and knowledge of Free Prior Informed consent (FPIC) processes.
