The Associate Director of Development (ADOP) will manage a pipeline of prospective and current donors for the India Program. The ADOP will systematically build the pipeline by identifying new suspects, qualifying or disqualifying prospects, and creating and implementing cultivation plans to convert prospects to donors. The ADOP will create plans for the ongoing cultivation of donors capable of major and/or deferred gifts. They conduct exploratory meetings with donors and prospects to determine capacity for giving and cultivates relationships with donors at a personal level. The ADOP provides ongoing opportunities for contact with prospective and current donors. The ADOP will be ideally located in California.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Associate Director of Development (ADOP) is responsible for increasing revenue for the India Program in target markets, especially California and Washington States, with preference for the role to be based in California. The ADOP will identify, qualify, and solicit major gift prospects. The ADOP will play a significant role in meeting the India Program’s annual fundraising goal which is currently $5 million and growing. The ADOP will cultivate and solicit donors through meetings, trips, events, and other activities. The ability to persevere in conversion of prospects to donors will be of the utmost importance. The ADOP will work largely on individual giving but should have the capability to secure corporate and foundation grants. They will work on a variety of activities including providing detailed program information to prospects and drafting personalized correspondence. The ADOP will be a polished fundraising professional. The ADOP will have a thorough understanding of the influencing factors on donors and the types of assets that may be used for the donor’s giving; applies such knowledge to interactions with donors and gift asks. They will capitalize on matching gift opportunities. The ADOP will work closely with the India Program Director of Development, the in-country Fundraising Manager, and a prospect researcher.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Aggressively and creatively build and manage a portfolio of 75 – 125 individual prospects to be qualified and converted donors.
  • Prioritize prospects with the capacity to make a gift of $100,000 or more.
  • Once the portfolio is developed, be responsible for 75 – 125 visits and 225 – 375 moves annually.
  • Network within TNC and leverage the organization’s fundraising capabilities for the India Program.
  • Persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups who are important to the organization’s overall prosperity.
  • Travel and work overtime as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with the California Chapter Fundraisers, who manage California based funders.
  • Work is diversified and may not always fall under established practices and guidelines.
  • Manage projects with several variables, meet realistic deadlines, manage timelines, and ensure accountability.
  • Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements.
  • Financial responsibility includes meeting fundraising objectives, working within a budget, and negotiating and contracting with vendors
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 6 years related experience or an equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents.
  • Experience in asking for and closing gifts of $50,000 or more.
  • Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, preferably in a large non-profit.
  • Experience working with fundraising principles and practices.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in current trends in charitable giving in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts or planned giving.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong writing skills
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. Knowledge of India preferred but not required.
  • Ability to determine an individual’s interests, capacity and potential for helping the Conservancy meet its goals, and act appropriately to tie those interests with the Conservancy’s work.
  • Ability to implement and coordinate fundraising plans, including individualized cultivation, solicitation.
  • Demonstrated experience using diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate staff and donors.
  • Direct fundraising experience.
  • Knowledge of current trends in the charitable giving.
  • Knowledge of the basics of charitable gift planning.
  • Technology savvy; able to develop PowerPoints and manage data bases if needed
