Love NPR?  Want to be part of the team working with Audie Cornish, Ari Shapiro, Mary Louise Kelly and Ailsa Chang?  NPR is looking for an Assistant Producer to help produce and book program material for our flagship afternoon program, All Things Considered.  You’ll work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and be part of the creative vision for story ideas for the public radio show where radio innovators like Ira Glass of This American Life, Alix Spiegel of Invisibilia and Guy Raz of The Ted Radio Hour all once worked as producers.  Joining ATC and NPR is your chance to keep our listeners informed about news, current affairs, arts and culture.   

Assistant Producers are expected to pitch ideas, edit audio and mix pieces; write news and program copy for hosts and contribute digital and social media content.  This is a Monday-Friday position with shifting hours.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Books guests:

  • Generates daily and long-term story and interview ideas
  • Stays current with major news stories and pitch ideas for interviews and pieces
  • Pre-interviews guests and prepare research material for hosts
  • Gathers news and interacts with audience (as assigned) through relevant social media platforms

Edits and mixes audio:

  • Edits host interviews and other audio
  • Prepares scripts and other materials as required
  • Produces rollovers

Writes news and program copy:

  • Drafts ledes for host interviews and reporter pieces
  • Drafts host copy, including but not limited to billboards, tape-and-copy elements and connective copy between elements

Delivers digital content:

  • Contributes content on social media
  • Drafts suitable copy for various social media platforms 
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 3 years experience in journalism
  • Proficiency with audio recording equipment and audio editing software
  • Excellent telephone and interviewing skills
  • Field production experience
  • Demonstrated writing ability
  • Experience working in self-operated digital audio studios
  • Radio production experience with an emphasis on writing and editing for radio
  • Experience producing on digital audio workstations
  • Experience working in news journalism
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure
  • Considerable understanding of topics of interest to a diverse audience
  • Experience with social media platforms
  • Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system
  • Ability and willingness to relocate
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts

Preferred: 

  • Familiar with public radio
  • Some live broadcast directing experience
