Teach For America- New York seeks a Director of Alumni Impact to develop and execute a strategy to harness the potential of local 5,000+ alumni, to expand opportunity and improve outcomes for our city’s most vulnerable populations. The Director of Alumni Impact will leverage the expertise of our network to identify systemic challenges to educational equity, and establish meaningful opportunities to address those challenges personally and professionally. The Director will be charged with crafting a vision and strategy for the alumni experience in New York City that focuses on engagement around critical issues, networking, and harnessing the collective power of alumni leadership towards educational equity. The ideal candidate will be a consummate organizer who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys creating structure and empowering community members to work together towards a common goal. You have experience in organizing diverse communities around an focal issue and goal, and can adapt to different environments and audiences easily. You possess the ability to think strategically and form a high-level perspective in terms of goal-setting and prioritizing, but also possess the operational skills to execute on activities with detail and excellence. The Director, Alumni Impact will report to the Managing Director, Community Affairs and manage the Manager, Alumni Projects.
Manage and support alumni leadership groups (Alumni Association, Collective, etc)
- Identify a broad, diverse and cross-sector group of alumni, partners and stakeholders with expertise in strategic focus area(s) and solicit their involvement in a task force
- Derive task force objectives aligned to the chief goal and facilitate the task force’s execution of this deliverable (i.e. convene monthly meetings with actionable outcomes)
- Laterally advise the executive boards of alumni leadership groups to set vision and strategy in line with TFA-NY’s regional vision and priorities and track their progress
- Partner with and/or coach diverse alumni leadership groups to identify and address chief barriers to progress for vulnerable populations. Support them in honing their voice in the movement to addressing those solutions individually, or through collective action with community leaders (including other alums), families, and students
- Facilitate communication and collaboration between these boards and with the Junior Board, TFA-NY’s junior fundraising body.
- Manage operations, including executive boards themselves, organizing meetings, budget oversight, and more
- Recruit and grow alumni leadership group board membership
Strategic Communications
- Partner with the Director, Communications and the Manager, Alumni Projects to create a clear and actionable communications strategy that will keep the region’s broad alumni base informed of key issues in educational equity and opportunities for them to engage meaningfully.
- Author alumni communications with regular cadence, informing the network of regional priorities and opportunities to become involved therein.
- Source alumni and key stories to be featured in prominent media outlets, ensuring NYC keeps educational equity at the top of the public agenda.
- Design the community-based aspects of our online platform, TFA Connect, so that alumni have space to build relationships and acquire regional context online
Alumni Team and Strategy Management
- Manage the Manager of Alumni Projects and ensure priorities and execution align with the desired continuum experience and outcomes, and manage seasonal staff responsible for assisting in the execution of the annual alumni survey, database maintenance, requests for alumni data and other responsibilities
- Provide guidance and oversight for the responsibilities and expected outcomes of the Alumni Team
- Collaborate with the Programs Team to create a strategy that will align messaging and support from pre-corps through alumnihood
- Partner with other regional sub-teams to manage and support alumni event-related communication, planning and execution.
Regional and Organizational Stewardship
- Participate in staff committees and task forces
- Corps member recruitment, admissions, and matriculation\
- Team meetings and professional development
- Regional events and programming (such as teacher orientation and end-of-year celebration)
- Act as a positive and inclusive team-wide culture leader
- 5-7 years of relevant experience, with at least four years of experience in community organizing (eg. broad based organizing, coalition building, union based organizing and field operations that build local organizations) and/or experience in politics, organizing, or civic engagement non-profit organizations -- 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4)) preferred
- Experience teaching or working with vulnerable populations preferred
- Teach For America corps experience preferred
