The Americas Division of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an Associate to provide administrative assistance to the team. The Americas Division is a part of the Program Department, which consists of regional and thematic divisions conducting research, reporting, and various other work. The Americas Division works to advance human rights in Latin America and conducts a wide range of work, including investigation, report writing, advocacy, and media work. The Associate position reports to the Executive Director of the Americas Division, based in Washington, DC. This is a full-time position based in the Washington, DC office. HRW anticipates that the successful candidate will begin this position in June 2018.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Providing day-to-day administrative support to Executive Director of the Americas Division and Division staff, including scheduling, making travel arrangements, processing divisional finances, preparing for meetings, and creating and maintaining extensive filing and archiving systems;
  • Assisting with preparing, drafting, editing, formatting, and/or distributing materials such as news releases, reports, tables, charts, briefing papers, op eds, publications, and web content;
  • Drafting documents and correspondence and responding to requests for information in both English and Spanish;
  • Maintaining communication among HRW’s offices, global staff, and external partners;
  • Assisting with desk research, electronic clipping, wires, and translations;
  • Assisting with events such as news conferences, staff meetings, and special events;
  • Assisting with recruitment, coordination, and mentoring of interns; and
  • Carrying out other duties as required.
Educational Background: 
A bachelor’s degree in human rights, international relations, or a related field is required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  • Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish are required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously are required.
  • Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
  • Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required.
  • Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications is required.
  • Strong interest in international human rights is preferred.
